"Courage." Mr. Matthews says while pointing o the board. "What does it mean?" he added. As usual Farkle was the only one who raised his hand.
"Well don't all raise your hands at once" Mr. Matthews says trying to joke around. "No okay, Farkle, what is courage?" he asks.
"The dictionary definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one; strength in the face of pain or grief." Farkle says.
"Correct, but as you said that is the dictionary definition. Mr.Friar what is courage to you?" he asks Lucas.
"Well Mr.Matthews as Winston Churchill once said 'courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen' "he said. Who knew Lucas knew these things off the top of his head? Then again he is Lucas the good so....
"Very well said Mr.Friar, and that brings us to our lesson. Courage is Not the strength to go on, but to go on when you have no strength. Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength. Your assignment is to write about someone in your life who you believe is courageous, and if any of you have any questions you may speak to me after class. Class is dismissed" and with that everyone left the classroom but me.
"Are you okay Maya?"Mr. Matthews asks me.
"Yeah, I just have a question about the assignment. Do I have to specify a specific person or can I generalize courage?"I ask.
"Maya I want you to think about someone in your life who you believe is courageous. I know your family and you come from a very courageous bunch" he said.

I have been racking my brain all week and I honestly haven't had any inspiration for this assignment. To make matters worse it's due in about five seconds.
"I hope you all have done your assignments. Who would like to come up and read theirs first?" Mr.Mattews asked. With that Riley, Farkle, Sarah, and Lucas all raised their hands.
"The floor is yours" he says.
"Wait Mr. Matthews I thought this was an individual assignment" I say confused.
"It was originally supposed to be, but after talking to me these four decided to team together"he said. Why didn't they include me?
"Courage"Riley states.
"That one word has many meanings" Lucas adds.
"We all have at least one person in our lives whether we realize or not, that have courage" Sarah says.
"A person we all believe has courage is Maya Penelope Hart"They all say in unison.
"Whether she realizes it or not Maya has an extraordinary amount of courage"says Farkle.
"She has the wisdom to know what must be done and the courage to do it." Sarah adds.
"Maya's strength isn't just about how much she can handle before she breaks. It's also about how much she must handle after she is broken." Lucas says.
"It takes nothing to join a crowd, but takes everything to stand alone, and she has done it so many times before" Sarah says.
"So Maya is woman of courage. Someone who has overcome tough times in her life, and pursues her goals. She stands up for what she believes in and never gives up."Riley says looking directly at me.
"Sometimes life has gotten hard, but she has always been strong. She doesn't let obstacles stand in her way."Sarah adds
"Finally, Maya has always stuck up for her friends no matter the situation. It is for this and many more reasons we love Maya and believe she is courageous"Lucas finished. If only they knew the truth about me and how much of a coward I am. With that I ran out of the classroom, and left the building How can I stand in there knowing that all I've ever done is lie to them.
Riley's P.O.V.
As soon as Maya ran out of the room I went after her. I know my dad isn't going to let Farkle, Lucas, or Sarah come to, so I guess it's up to me to find Maya. I saw her run out of the building so I chased after her calling her name. I've been running for about ten minutes now, and I think I'm lost and to top it all of it isn't the best place to be in New York. As I was walking trying to find my way back to the school I felt something go over my mouth, and before I could react my world faded to blackness.
