Every year was the same for me. After three years I simply found no amusement. A new outfit for the first day of school and some new shoes was as close as I got to getting excited over something.
Everything was the same yet so different than how it had begun freshmen year. Most realize who the real friends are and those who pretend to be. I had many acquaintances that did just that, pretend.
I was meeting Julie in the cafeteria, so she could hand me a very needed frappuccino. It had sort of become a tradition for her to bring us coffee on the first day, since we were going to be stuck in homeroom all day filling out the same stupid papers. I was looking around for her when all of a sudden, I was pushed forward and gravitating towards the floor with my face first. I quickly got up red-faced, infuriated at whoever decided to push me. Instead I froze at the sight of two guys throwing fists in the air, blood spilling out their noses. I backed away as students surrounded them, and the assistant principals made their way to the crowd to start shooing the nosy teens away and break up the fight. What an interesting first day today became.
The first day was all hugs and smiles for some; for me, I wished I could have stayed in bed for a few more hours. Arriving sulkily to my homeroom, I spotted Damon and Nikolai and slowly walked to what we had claimed as our table for almost four years. Immediately they began excited chatter about the fight that broke between two sophomores. I on the other hand did not care about two immature boys who had probably fought over a girl who did not appreciate either one. Most of the time fights were about a boy or a girl. I always thought it was irrational to bring violence into something that could be handled in a different manner.
"Mackenzie!" Nikolai snapped me out of my mind trip.
"What? Sorry, I wasn't paying attention."
"Yeah you don't say," he said and rolled his eyes. "Did you see the new kid yet?"
"We've been here all morning. I haven't seen anyone," I replied in an agitated tone.
"Well someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," Damon added while he tried to contain his laughter.
I leaned back in my chair. "Oh shut up, I'm just tired; there is no need to get all upset about it, don't be such a girl. Is there a reason why you brought it up?"
"You're a girl, so you're insulting yourself." Nikolai squinted his eyes at me. "Anyways I haven't seen him yet, so I wanted to know how he looked or at least know his name."
"Nope, sorry can't help you there."
Sometimes they were worse than girls, looking for some new gossip all the time. In my experience, it was the male population who gossiped more.
After what seemed like a billion years and endless rounds of board games, the bell finally announced the end of the first day of torture.
I put my earphones in and just concentrated on the floor. As I walked, I made a game out of not stepping on the lines on the tile. Yes, sometimes I acted like a child. Not paying attention to where I was going, I banged into some guy's back who had stopped all of a sudden. I was about to start saying something rude when I saw the most beautiful eyes in the world.
"I'm so sorry," said the boy with the big blue eyes.
"Oh, er, it's fine, no big deal!"
Yeah that was totally smooth, Mackenzie. I mentally slapped myself as I walked away as fast as I could.
Well that was weird of me. I was known for always having a smart mouth remark. I did not know why I had been stunned enough by that boy that I could not even say a coherent sentence to him. I shook myself and started changing for cheer practice once I got to my locker. I probably won't ever see him again, so it doesn't even matter.
