I sigh and put my bag back up on the wall, I hope father is doing well. I pull off my clothes and change into something more formal, a beautiful red skirt embroidered with small shells. And a matching top, I don't usually wear this outfit, it leaves a lot of stomach and chest exposed and when I wear it I feel it could get knocked off with even the smallest of bumps. Today is special, I haven't seen my family in a long time, I should wear something special.
"Muscle up buttercup!" I hear as I exit my cabin. "The horizon has blessed... us... with..." he trails off when he sees me. His head shakes. "The horizon has blessed us with the sight of land!" He says confidently.
"You ok Maui?" I ask, concern as present as the water.
"Me? Oh yeah! I'm fine!"
I raise a brow, unconvinced.
"Come on, in fine." He says, sounding slightly annoyed. I smile softly and huff, guess he's ok. I look across the water and see the island approaching. Excitement fills me the way it always does when I see land. I smile and look at the ships, the kid at the mass is eagerly looking at the ever growing sight of land. I move to the front of the boat.
"Line formation!" I call to the other ships.
"Yes chief!" The other boats reply. The boats spread out until we are all in a line formation, we get to the sandy shore. All six boats safely land on the beach. Everyone cheers and jumps on the beach, greeted by the other villagers. I hurry to my cabin for my bag.
"Where you going?" My arm gets snagged by a strong hand.
"Just need my bag," I smile and pull away. I hastily grab my bag and jump off the boat. I hit the ground and the worst feeling accumulates in my stomach.
"Oh no." I say without thinking. "Please no," I run where my gut takes me. Up the mountain to the healers cabin. Mother and father are both there, my stomach sinks. I rush and sit beside mom.
"Moana," fathers voice is weak, but he smiles like when I would dance for him when I was younger. His face is full of love and pride.
"I brought herbs from other islands, medicines-" I pull my bag off but he pushes it away.
"I have fought long enough, the inevitable can not be changed."
"Father no, don't say that please," my eyes welled.
"Moana, I am ready. That does not mean I want to," his hand moves to my face, holding it gently. A lone tear streams from my face, he wipes it away delicately.
"I mean, who would want to spend the rest of eternity as a ghost with your grandmother?" I let out a small laugh, it quickly dies. He drops his hand from my face and takes mothers hands, a tear trailing softly down her cheek.
"What did I say? No tears please."
"I know," she wipes her eyes.
"My mother chose the tattoo of a sting ray," he turns his wrist to me, his voice getting weaker. His arm is covered in tattoos but the main one in his wrist, a bird.
"I chose a great bird of many colours."
"Very manly," mom spoke quietly, father chuckled before coughing. My heart kept sinking in my chest, further and further until I began to doubt us existence. The only thing that kept me sure of its reality was the pain radiation inside my chest.
"Just know, that as you explore the sea, I explore the sky above you."
"Father... please."
"Moana, I have to meet my mum, she won't be happy if I'm late," he smiled at me. He leaned forward slightly, I rested my head on his.
"I love you Moana."
"I love you," tears cascaded down my cheeks, I couldn't stop them. He layed back down, he took one of my hands, and one of mother hands.
"Goodbye."
