“Do I really have to do this?” Jake complained for the fifth time that day.
I sighed, annoyed. “Yes, now get your pretty little ass up there, and apologize.”
His eyebrows rose up teasingly. “You think my ass’ pretty?”
For a second, a blush rose up my cheeks, but I forced it away. It wasn’t like I blushed a lot; the only person that could actually make me blush was Jake. Honestly, his butt was one of the bests in the world, but I wasn’t about to tell him that when he had something serious to do. Wait, scratch that. I will never tell him that, it would just be plain awkward if I did.
“Was that the only thing you heard out of that?”
He grinned innocently. “Pretty much, yeah.”
I rolled my eyes. “Are you scared Jakey?” I cooed in a voice that you would use on a baby.
He narrowed his eyes, and for a second his eyes darkened. “No.”
“Don’t lie, you’re scared.” I stated.
He stomped his foot like a five year old. “I’m not scared!”
“Maybe not. But that means you’re just a wimp.” I stated triumphantly when I saw him raise his hands in desperation.
We were only five feet away from the door, but Jake was too much of a wimp to take the final steps. Just three more steps, you can do it. I ordered him in my mind. But I knew it didn’t work, I didn’t have magic powers like mesmerizing or something like that. Although at times like this, I really wish I did.
“I’m not a wimp!” He stomped his foot again.
I smirked at his childish gestures. “Then ring the doorbell.”
“No!”
“See? You’re a wimp!”
“Maybe I don’t want to ring the stupid doorbell!” He tried, but with a shake of my head, he quickly glowered back into his spot.
“’Cause you’re a wimp?” I countered, annoying him.
“I’m not a wimp!” He tried again.
“Well, you sure are acting like one.” I sighed. We’ve been at this for the past five minutes, whoever that was watching us probably thought we were maniacs. I glanced at Jake’s angry expression and twitching foot warily. Yup, we definitely looked like maniacs. But it wasn’t how we looked that I worried about. No, I was curious about why he wouldn’t just man up and apologize to Flynn for acting like a dick.
“Whatever, I’m not going in there no matter what you say.” He said finally, and crossed his arms to make his point.
“Wimp,” I coughed under my breath, but it was meant for him to hear as well.
“Fine! I’ll go ring the stupid doorbell!” He shouted, but glared at me after realizing what I made him do. “But you owe me ice cream,” he added.
I shrugged. “Fair enough.”
“Of the chocolate kind,” he added again.
“Now you’re just stalling,” I sighed.
With another death glare, Jake took a deep breath and stomped the short distance between the car and the door. I didn’t get what was wrong with him. Why the hell did he have against Flynn? He was a nice guy, has a good sense of humour and was a good friend to me. What was not to like?
Jake was shuffling his feet nervously as I walked up to him. “Chill,” I ordered him. But he ignored me and continued to look anywhere but the door as we waited for him to answer.
Finally, after one minute of complete torture, the door opened. Flynn stepped out with a big smile on his face, wearing a tight fitting T-shirt and low hang jeans. I had to say, he looked hot. You could see the outlines of his stomach muscles through the shirt, and his strong arms flexed as he leaned against the wall. But even with that, I didn’t feel anything for him. I guess I’m officially a Jake minded girl, I thought solemnly.
“Yes?” He questioned uncertainly after a few awkward seconds.
Jake shifted again. “I’m here to uh, to apologize.” He started and looked at me with disgust written all over his face. “For my, uh rude behaviours earlier today.”
Surprise filled Flynn’s sharp features and his eyes widened slightly in shock. Obviously, he wasn’t expecting Jake to apologize. But it was expected for someone to apologize to you after being rude, so I couldn’t help but wonder why it was so hard to believe that Jake was saying ‘sorry’.
“Oh, um. That’s alright,” he said after another moment of awkwardness.
I couldn’t take it anymore. “Okay, so what’s the deal?”
Jake looked at me innocently and asked “what deal?” at the same time as Flynn. Unfortunately, that set them off to another glaring contest.
“Why are you two acting so weird?!” I shouted in their faces, and then cringed at my own outburst and loudness.
They both looked at each other, like they were communicating through their eyes, while I just stood there, confused and silently fuming. What’s the big secret? My mind wanted to shout at them.
Finally, Flynn seemed to understand whatever Jake was trying to tell him and nodded. They both turned to me at the same time. If this was some dramatic movie, I would’ve laughed. But as I noticed the seriousness in both of their eyes, I held it in and stared at them expectantly.
“So, Farah,” Jake started. “This probably is a surprise but… Flynn was actually my adopted brother.”
What? Jake couldn’t have a brother! I started laughing and my stomach shook during the process. “What? You – him, brothers!” I managed to choke out between breaths.
“He’s not lying Farah,” Flynn told me seriously.
I stopped laughing immediately and took in notice of the sternness and seriousness in both of their expressions and voices.
I mentally shook my head. This couldn’t be true, my mind disagreed. Jake, my best friend Jake, has an adopted brother?!
