Chapter Ten
“Fine,” I hesitantly agreed.
Jake’s face lit up like a little kid’s and tugged lightly on my arm, urging me to go faster. If I wasn’t so mad at him, I would’ve laughed at his childlessness. “We gonna get ice cream,” he sang happily in what sounded like a really bad imitation of a baby’s voice.
I smirked, hiding my laughter. “You sound like you’re constipated.”
“I do not!” He shook his blond hair, which had grown out since Christmas.
“Yes you do.”
“Do not!” Jake replied stubbornly and unlocked his car.
I shook my head and laughed silently when Jake wasn’t looking. I mean, what was I doing? I was supposed to be mad at him, not joking around with him like he hasn’t lied!
Once I settled into the car, I closed my mouth and refused to look at Jake, who was peering at me curiously.
It was decided. I wasn’t going to talk to him until he confesses unless I had to. The tension in the car was almost suffocating, and I could feel Jake’s confused looks that he kept on shooting me.
But I paid him no attention and turned on the radio, trying to end the awkwardness. Luckily, one of my favourite songs was playing.
“The sun goes down, the stars come out,” I sang, completely off-key. But hey, it wasn’t my fault that I had the musical genes of a strangled cat. “But all that counts, is here and now. My universe, will never be the same. I’m glad you came, I’m glad you came.”
“Nice singing,” Jake commented sarcastically. I was tempted to remind him of his own lack-of-musical-genes-ness, but decided not to since I was supposed to ignore him.
It was silent for a while as the radio turned into commercials, and I couldn’t help but steal a little glance at him through the review mirror.
One of his eyebrows was raised questioningly as I looked at him, but the corners of his lips quirked up to a smirk once he saw me peeking.
“So that’s how you’re gonna play, right?” He asked.
Ignoring him, I stared out the window and interested myself with an old man riding his bicycle.
“Fine, keep ignoring me.”
Annoyingly, on the inside I wanted him to keep bugging me, because that meant he cared about what I thought, right? I shook my head to clear my thoughts and leaned back in the comfortable leather seat that I had grown to love.
Unfortunately, I obviously thought about that way too soon, because at the next second, the blonde’s mouth opened up and out came the sentence that completely ruined my appetite.
