"Wait, guys," Jen said, holding her hands up. They both turned around to look at her, seeming almost ... pissed.
"What?" Cam said impatiently.
"Are you even thinking about this right? Like, what's gonna happen if we do run away?"
"Um, easy. We're free," Ash pipes up.
"Until the gods catch and punish us!" Jen yells.
Everyone falls silent. Jen knew she shouldn't have yelled, but she wasn't going to watch her two friends get their asses in trouble and just sit there and do nothing. But her efforts were clearly in vain because they didn't look like they were focusing on what she was saying. Something was clearly up.
"Jen," Cam said quietly. She turned around and looked at him. He looked tired, stressed out, and like he was about to give up. Ash crossed her arms and listened, still glaring at Jen.
"We're leaving whether you like it or not," he said blankly. "So, I just have one question: are you coming with us or not?"
Jen's mouth almost dropped open. She almost screamed, "you're all gonna die!" before she remembered something. Josh. He was out there. In the human world. If she got out, she would see him. Again. She didn't allow herself to dwell on it too much, because she knew if she did she would decide it made more sense to stay. But neither Cam nor Ash were making sense, so why should she?
Like, seriously, weren't they allowed to go outside and have some fun? Their life wasn't all about living in some closed cage and obeying their "masters". They were alive, and they should live like the living.
She almost smiled, "Hell yes, I am."
Cam and Ash didn't ask about her sudden change of heart, but they did frown a little. "Okay," Ash said, "let's hurry up and get out of here before they find out we're missing."
She took Cam's hand, which, for some reason, was always warm, and the three of them started running. The only thing on their minds was, "freedom". Naturally, Jen had to run really slowly so they'd be able to catch up with her.
A few hours later, they were already far away from Camp Half-Blood. They stopped to take a break, and that was when Jen noticed that Cam and Ash were holding hands. She almost burst out laughing.
"Aww, you guys are being cute again," she said as they walked around. Up above, the moon lit up the sky, and people around were chatting, walking, and laughing. They all knew that if they wanted to blend in, they had to do the same thing.
Cameron and Ashley looked at each other, confused. "What do you mean, 'cute'?" Ash asked, looking a little nervous.
Jen crossed her arms, "Well, I don't know about you guys, but to me, holding hands is the universal sign for --" Cam and Ash quickly pulled their hands away, and Jen burst out laughing mid-sentence.
"Is that why you're being, like, extra-nice to each other?" Jen continued.
Cam glared at her for what felt like the millionth time that day, "Jen, just shut up."
Ash felt her cheeks heat up. Damn it! Why am I always blushing? she thought again.
"Jen, I don't know what you're implying, but if you're trying to say that we're dating, well then you're wrong," Ash said. She wanted to make her voice loud and confident, but the lie came out quiet and her voice shook. Damn it, why am I like this?! she thought.
"Yeah, we're not," Cam said, to which Jen rolled her eyes, mouthing, "totally."
"Hey, do you guys want to get something to eat? I'm hungry," Ash said, trying to change the subject.
"Yeah, I'm starving," Cam said, turning around to face Ash, "but as a side note, you're always hungry, boo," he teased, smiling a little.
But before Ash could give him a reply, Jen realized something, "Guys, umm, we have no money."
"Well, fuck," they both said at the same time.
"I knew this was gonna happen," Ash said, her voice showing fear, "Damn it, we shouldn't have run away." She ran her hand through her hair, already starting to panic. "I mean, we have literally no money, like we're just gonna starve to death out here. No one even –"
"Ash," Cam said softly, placing his hand on her shoulder, "calm down. We're gonna be fine, okay?"
"No we're not, and don't even..."
Jen wasn't listening anymore. She started biting her nails, the voices of her two friends were merely background music. She had to think. They needed to find a solution. How do you make money really fast if you're sixteen or seventeen?
A second later, it was like a light bulb went off above her head
as the idea clicked into place, "Guys! I got it!" she screamed. Both Ashley and Cameron looked at her. "What?" they both said.
"We should be porn stars!" she said.
At first, she was met with silence. Then Ash burst out laughing and Cam face-palmed so hard his face almost broke.
A few seconds later, they were all silent again, still thinking. That was when, all of a sudden, Cam's eyes brightened and he snapped his fingers, "I know what we should do."
Both Ash and Jen looked at him, trying not to sigh out loud. Knowing him, it was probably robbing a bank or something equally crazy. "Ash, your brother, Nico."
"What about him?" she asked.
"Well, isn't he supposed to find ..You know..number four?" he said. Number four was some half-blood who had run away from Camp Half-Blood. No one actually knew who they were, just some missing person. Nico was supposed to find him.
"Well, Nico's a lazy guy," Cam continued. "I don't think he'd mind if he transferred the mission over to us."
"In exchange for cash?" Jen asked.
"Yup," he said, a sly smile spreading across his face. "We find number four, and we get the money."
