He was cold.
So cold.
Not only his skin, but inside also.
He felt as though his heart had been frozen.
Stabbed with frozen steel.
And it kept pumping frozen blood filled with pain to the rest of his body. He could not escape the cold. It came from inside.
He wrapped his arms around himself in an attempt to keep warm, but it was no use. He felt as if he would never feel warmth again. Felt as though, without her, he would never be able to de-numb himself.
He felt the numb and pain in flashes. It was mostly pain though. He was not hurt on the outside. His pain was the worst kind. The kind that came from within. The kind that there was no dealing with. The kind that made you just want to give up and to get lost in the mist.
But, no. He could not do that. He had to be strong. He had to survive. For her. All he was and knew was for her. She was everything. And now, she was gone.
He did not know if or when he would ever see her again. Ever touch her soft skin, ever feel the surge of joy that was her warm embrace. He ached with the longing of her. The pain was unbearable.
His need for her company was unimaginable. It was a physical thing, and it weighed him down every step he took weighing more and more on his soul. But he had to keep going, he had to push on. The memory of her face was all that kept him going. And it was barely enough.
He felt something pressing into his backside. He cautiously put his hand in his back pocket. He was stunned.
He couldn't believe after all that had happened his wallet was still in his back pocket!
He slowly drew it out. And gazed at it as though it might disappear at any second. Slowly, as though he was holding an injured bird, he opened the wallet. When his eyes befell upon what the wallet contained, he broke down. Again. It felt like a punch in the stomach. He doubled over.
For there in the little sleeve of his old, warn leather wallet was her face. The most beautiful face in the world.
