The motel room was filled with a mutual sadness that night. The three hunters sat quietly for hours thinking about the same thing and knowing it would hurt to do it.
Dean sat at the table brooding. His head bowed and his body tense.
Sam glanced at Lani who was already watching from her spot on the second bed."So Roy really believes." Sam stated blankly, finally breaking the heavy silence.
"I don't think he has any idea what his wife's doing." Dean turned his body so he could face the others, his legs hanging over the side of the chair and his arm on the back, propping his head up.
"No woman would want to look that desperate in front of the one they love. Especially if that love was a priest. It's practically scandalous." The Dean nodded.
"Well we can't just let this continue." Sam seemed to remember something at those words and hastily dug around the mound of papers until he found what he was looking for.
"Here, I found this." Sam held out a book to Dean. He stood and received the book then proceeded to pace around the room as he searched through it. Lani observed the altercation with interest.
"What is that?"
"It was hidden in their library. It's ancient. Written by a priest who went dark side. There's a binding spell in here for trapping a reaper." Lani whistled and readjusted herself on the bed so she was hanging upside down on the end of it.
"Ten hells... that's gotta be powerful." Sam pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded.
"Definitely has to be a hell of a spell." Dean passed the book to Lani who took it gratefully and flipped through it eagerly.
"Yeah. You gotta build a black alter with seriously dark stuff. Bones, human blood--"
"Yeah I can see where you were going with the whole scandalous description Lani." Dean commented as he sat beside her on the bed, reading through the ancient pages.
"Exactly, to cross a line like that, a preachers wife. Black magic. Murder. Evil.."
"Desperate. Her husband was dying, she didn't have anything to save him. She was using the binding spell to keep the reaper away from Roy."
"Cheating death..."
"And quite literally." Lani confirmed as she shut the book with a grimace.
"Yeah but Roy's alive, so why is she still using the spell?" Lani shrugged.
"Don't know." Sam admitted. "To force the reaper to kill people Sue Ann thinks are immoral."
"Humans..." Lani muttered rigidly. Dean glanced at her questioningly but didn't question her.
"May God save us from half the people who think they're doing God's work."
"So we all know that we gotta break that binding spell, but how are we going to go about doing it?"
"Question of the hour sunshine. You know Sue Ann had a coptic cross like this. When she dropped it the reaper backed off."
"So you think we gotta find the cross or destroy the alter?" Lani stood abruptly and crossed the room to look at the picture Sam had found in the book.
"Maybe both. Whatever we do we better do it soon, or he's healing Layla tonight."
~*~
"Alright, there's Layla and Roy. Where's Sue Ann?"
"Lani, you in?"
"Yeah. I'm at the window now, Sue Ann's inside."
"Woman, what is taking so long you were supposed to be inside the house."
