"I've gotta to hand it to you gidget, you know your pizza." Dean shoved another slice in his mouth and continued searching through his father's journal. Lani hummed in response and flipped through another dusty old book that Dean had thrust into her lap. Sam as still out doing who knows what, and it was up to the two green eyed hunters to figure out what to do with their predicament. So one pizza pizza box, and three pillow fights over the last piece later darkness began settling on the town and the only noises that penetrated the peace were cars zooming by and a noisy group three rooms down. Otherwise, the place was quiet and perfect for research.

"I hate research."

"I've already given you and Sam enough info on the symbol. So at this point it's either some sort of Yazata, or a Daeva." Dean glanced backward at Lani with confusion evident on his face.

"What language are you speaking? Remember, Sam's the smart one, I'm the dropout--" Lani rolled her eyes and shut the book on her lap causing a cloud of dust to erupt from the book.

"Your level of intelligence is not defined by the amount of time you spend sitting behind a desk reading a book, Dean. How many graduates do you know that can defeat monsters and build their own equipment?" Dean wracked his brain and pondered the angle Lani had presented him.

"None." He eventually answered.

"Exactly." Lani said. "The brilliance of a person isn't limited to math or science or even how many degrees they have." Lani settled back down into the bed and reopened her book. Dean watched her a moment.
Young hunters aren't normally very wise. Dean knew this because when his dad and even himself first started hunting they would destroy themselves from the inside out.
But Lani wasn't just smart or clever. She had a wisdom in her eyes was never present in someone their age.

"Lani can I ask you something?" Forcing herself to tear her eyes from the book, Lani lifted her head and shot Dean a tired smile.

"Sure."

"How long have you been hunting?" Lani leaned back and let out a huge contemplative breath that blew a few rogue strands of hair away from her face.

"Ever since I can remember." She told him. "I didn't actually get to hunt the monsters right off the bat, but I was raised on myths and legends, then trained to deal with them." Dean frowned.

"You mean all your life... you knew monsters were under your bed, you knew that the kid who sat next to you in class could be a beast...?" Lani chuckled.

"Yeah. Although I never went to school so I wouldn't know about who sits next to me. There was this one time, however, I was hunting a shapeshifter and--" Dean held up a hand to stop the girl from rabbit trailing into an hour ling story about a hunt. He knew those stories, he often was the one telling them. But now wasn't the time.

"As fascinated as I am about your strange hunting stories, I see the point you've been trying to get across and I will try to see things differently. Right now though we have some sort of ancient creature to kill." Flashing a forced smile Dean tuned back in his seat and began surfing the web once again. He felt kind of bad for cutting her off the way he had, but people were in danger and he didn't have the time to dwell on his own problems.

"If we're being technical..." Lani continued. "It's Avestan. The language... It's one of the languages the Zoroastrians would have used." Dean stared off into a wall while he accepted the fact that he was now traveling with two know-it-all's.

He knew Lani was right though. About his worth. It was going to be harder than he thought to keep her at a distance.
