"gerard, i'm so sorry."

gerard looked terrified (don't you fucking dare). he glanced between mikey and i, studying each of our faces before making eye contact with mikey. "who are you?" he said. mikey's face fell. "w-what?" he spoke, utterly confused.

"gerard, he's your brother. that's mikey, remember?" i held gerard's hand, tracing circles on his hand with my thumb.

"that's not my brother. i don't have a brother."

mikey was crushed. he had practically fallen apart in a matter of seconds. he shuffled over to gerard, stopping and standing next to his bed. "you don't remember me?" mikey asked. gerard studied his brother's face, squinting his eyes and then closing them. he opened his eyes again and shook his head. "no, i don't. i'm sorry."

mikey sniffed. "alright, that's okay." gerard stared at him politely. "so, your name is mikey?" he asked. mikey nodded. "well, uh... nice to meet you, i guess." mikey frowned, a single tear running down his cheek. "gerard, don't you know who i am? you have to! please, gerard. remember when you and i would make things up? you'd take me down to the place where we could hear them play. gerard, we were brothers. we are brothers." he sobbed.

gerard didn't say anything.

"alright, mikey. let's wait in the hall, okay?" i led mikey out into the hall. "let him talk to elena." i said. he nodded in agreement. "okay." we waited for a few minutes before elena walked out into the hallway. gerard's nurse approached us. "i'm assuming you're gerard's guardian?" she gestured to elena and elena nodded. "come with me." the nurse led her down the hallway and into the room and mikey followed, looking back and frowning at me before he entered the room.
