FAIR WARNING:

This first chapter has hardly anything to do with the rest of this story. It's simply to describe the characters.

Have fun! :)

Chapter One

I stand on the steps in the rain contemplating weather or not to go to school.

I know what you're thinking;

"Wow, there's always rain in these stupid teenager-written stories"

Yeah, well rain is pretty fucking great.

Anyway

I watch the cars pass on the freeway in front of my apartment building, wishing I was in one of them.

I turn around and walk up the rest of the stairs, and walk through the concrete hallway. Dragging my feet the whole way, I open the door and find nobody's home. No mom, no brother, no dad. Brother's at school, dad's on his way to work, and I have no idea where my mother is.

It's all silent except for the thunder. I throw myself onto the couch and stare out the window at the trees scratching on the building.

I spend about 20 minutes staring. The rain doesn't let up at all.

My dad gets home out of breath.

"Hey sweetie!" He says, trying to grin.

"Hey." I continue to stare out the window.

"What's so fascinating?"

"Rain."

"We get it all the time, it gets old."

"Wait, why are you home?"

"I forgot to give you something before I left!

"You know we don't have money for things, dad."

"I saved up."

"Well.. what is it?"

He sets down his messenger bag on the couch and digs through it. He pulls out a CD I've wanted forever.

I stare at it and look back at him.

"Are you serious?"

"Of course I am."

I hug him tightly, grab the CD, and run to the radio in the living room. I put it in and lay on the rough carpet next to the speakers, waiting for it to start.

We've got bills to pay and yet he still spends the little money he has to make me happy. I love my dad.

I hear the door open followed by a scoff from my mom.

"What is this?" She says picking up the CD case.

I bite my lip and turn away from her.

"It's a CD, Margaret." My dad says.

"I know what it is Tom. I meant why is it here."

"I bought it for our daughter."

"You know we can't afford that! You could've spent that on bills!"

My mom takes out the CD and puts it in the case. She throws it down on the floor and steps on it with the heel of her shoe, cracking the case and most likely breaking the CD inside.

I stare at the shards of broken plastic and hear my dad begin to yell.

"DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU JUST DID?"

"YES! I DESTROYED THE CD. YOU'RE WELCOME." She yells back.

"YOU DESTROYED THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES HER HAPPY ANYMORE"
