I tap my feet impatiently as time drags on and we make up more and more sounds. It's obvious to me that this won't work. First of all, we cannot memorize this many different sounds, and second of all, if we try to make a sentence out of them, some sounds will bleed together and we could misinterpret the message. We don't need sounds. We need quick, easy, simple movements.
As the rest of the group keeps shouting over one another making different and mostly annoying sounds, I head over to the abandoned crate of sports balls. I pick up a tennis ball and hurl it at Abhinav, who is taken by surprise and just barely catches it. I pick a football and throw it at Savvy who ducks and glares at me after it falls to the ground. I throw a ball to every one else and then take for myself. I point towards each ball then copy the throwing motion, followed by a movement to represent that particular ball.
Cailey, who has been watching closely the whole time, goes to the whiteboard, and draws a sketch of every ball, then draws arrows pointing towards a hand making a throwing motion. She looks to me for confirmation, and I give her a thumbs-up. She nods and begins to draw a dog, a cat, a rabbit, and a bird. The arrows she draws connect to a pair of hands flicking down to look like paws. I copy the motion, and everyone else follows except for Savvy, who is still angry about the football. I roll my eyes, and she practically snarls. I laugh and draw a lion on the board, then copy Savvy's snarl. The boys laugh, and though Savvy looks as if she would like to kill me, a smile forms under her glaring eyes.
We continue to group things together, such as wild cats, countries, food, and geographical features. We make a shared symbol for each group, then make an individual symbol for the specific things. As we continue, I look at the timer. 18:00. I think we can make it.
