The room is gray and sterile. There are no windows, and the only thing in the room is a crate full of sport balls, a whiteboard, and one piece of paper. The room is 20' by 15' and has a low ceiling. We are not allowed to leave unless we have to use the bathroom. We all sat in a circle, staring at each other, without speaking. I'm the only one who speaks English. There's a Spanish boy, an Irish girl, a Chinese boy, a Greek girl, and an Indian boy.
Everyone else looks nervous, which is stupid, really. If we have 24 hours to complete the task, we can simply make up hand symbols or sounds to represent every letter of the alphabet. That takes 10 minutes, tops. Then, we simply show the others what the symbols/sounds represent. With the chaos of six people trying to explain at the same time, it could take around an hour to get everyone in order. Set aside another hour for the explaining, and that's only 2 hours, 10 minutes. We'll probably need a couple hours for practice and to increase our speed, but after that, we're good to go, with around 20 hours to spare.
I clap my hands to get everyone's attention. Everyone is shocked and immediately looks up. Amen, the tall Chinese boy, claps back. Brogan, realizing what Amen is trying to do, claps using the same pattern. I violently shake my head, and instead grab the whiteboard and use the black expo to draw an A. I put it on display for everyone, but as Cailey tilts her head and Abhinav shrugs, I realize we can't do symbols to represent the alphabet. We all have different alphabets.
I quickly erase the A and shake my head to dismiss it. I sit down with them, and now I'm nervous, too. Cailey takes the whiteboard and draws all of our faces. She tries to say my name, but it sounds more like "Saw-vey" and "moth genius". Math genius. Of course. Nobody has the same alphabet, but we all may have the same numbers.
