I take the expo and turn over the whiteboard to draw the layout of a computer on the backside since we don't have one in the room, and I can't let any of the symbols be erased.
I turn around and symbol to the others. "We might be able to create emojis for the symbols, and transfer them onto a new keyboard."
Everyone nods, although they all look quite confused about what exactly I plan to do. I signal over Savvy, and instruct her to solve various math equations that will help me code a new keyboard. Then, I get Cailey, and tell her to make accurate drawings of our hand symbols on the one piece of paper we were given.
All of us get to work, and I sketch out the coding I would use on a real computer onto my computer layout. I show Savvy my equations (which were written in Indian numerals) and she translates them into English numerals, which I put into the coding. Galeno helps with the science part of it, and Brogan and Amen work with Cailey on creating the symbol chart.
By the time I finish and review the code, the timer only has one hour left. We all look at each other and I can tell by the look on everyone's face that they are waiting for someone to confirm that they are finished. I raise my hands and signal, "I think we are done."
Amen cheers, and the rest of us join in. I feel like a huge weight was just lifted off my shoulders. For the last hour, we review some more and even do a speed game.
When the timer stops, the doors swing open and two UN people enter. When they ask us if we completed the task, we smile at each other, then proudly signal "Yes".
