In memory of a dear friend.
She loved the series more than I ever did.•-•-•-•-•-•
Beatrice sighed as a book laid open on her lap. She'd been on the same page now for the last hour. Normally she'd finish books in two days, but now she would frequently lose concentration and find herself staring out the window an hour later. Her dog, Owen, slept soundly on the rug next to her. The room was dimly lit and the only source of light came from a candle and the fading sunlight from the outside. She reckoned it was about the time her mother would call out her name to help with dinner so she saved her spot, closed to book, and blew out the candle. Just as she was about to close the curtain, her mother's voice rang from the kitchen and called her name. She yelled "coming!" in return and quickly pulled the drapes together.
She entered the hallway, instantly colliding with her younger siblings, twins Marge and Felix, who were at the moment playing tag. "Watch where you're going, would you?" She scolded them. Marge said sorry while Felix taunted at her. Beatrice, about to threaten Felix, once again heard her mother's voice call out. And with that, she made her way to the kitchen.
Everything and everyone was back to normal. It was as if there hadn't been a curse that turned them all bluebirds, which had occurred almost a year ago. A horrible guilt swept over her every time she thought about the events that transpired because of what she did. But not all events were terrible. She did get to meet Greg and Wirt, which weren't all that bad.Wirt.
The very thought of his name made her heart thump quicker and her mind began to explode with everything that was him. Beatrice could never forget about the boy who once wore a red cone hat on his head, much less stop thinking about him. Every time her mother would mention him or asked a question about him, she suddenly became very flustered and clumsy. "Too bad he couldn't stay. He was such a nice boy," her mother said.
"Nice" doesn't even begin to cover it, Mom she sighed to herself as she unknowingly started to daydream about him. This happened frequently nowadays, unfortunately for her. The newfound emotion as rather annoying and bothered her to almost no end. It all started two nights before Wirt and Greg left the Unknown...She remembered how cold it was that night. The winter night sky was filled with clouds that shot down snow and blew gusts of wind against them. Poor Wirt was treading his way through the storm and with each passing minute, it was getting more and more difficult for him to walk on further. But he trudged along, stopping only to bounce Gregory up to keep the little boy from falling down his back. Jason Funderburker, the frog, was kept close to his chest to keep him from freezing. Beatrice had found some warmth inside Wirt's cloak and nuzzled closer to him as she tried to sleep. It was difficult for Wirt to see ahead of him and trying to shield his eyes from the snow was no help. He didn't have a lantern or a torch to help guide the way. Little gaps between the clouds allowed the light of the moon and stars to provide him with some light.
Soon it felt like hours of walking and Beatrice could feel Wirt growing more tired as he kept walking. Finally, not taking it anymore, she peeked her head out of his cloak and looked up at him.
"Wirt?" she quietly called out to him.
"Hmm?" he replied. She could see this breath.
"I think it's time to find a place to rest now. Greg can't handle the cold for much longer. And neither can you," she said in a worried tone.
"But we can't just stop now, we still have so much ground to cover!" he rejected.
"Wirt," she said his name as sternly as she could, "It won't do us any good if you get frozen out here. It won't do Greg any good at all, Wirt." The boy was silent for a while as he kept walking. His breathing was getting increasingly noticeable.
