My body clings to the ground and the mutt pins me down. It goes for my arm and takes a clean bite. I scream out loud and try to fight it off, and get blood in my eyes. I fell Gale pushing on the mutt to get it off, and it almost attacks him. He grabs the mutt by it's neck and yanks at it, causing it to yelp. It falls off of me and Gale grabs it by it's head, and in one swift move jerks it's head to the side. I stand suddenly, eyeing Gale.
"Where did you learn that?" I ask. He doesn't answer but surveys my arm. He touches the wound and I scream out in pain.
"Shh! Someone will hear us!" He tells me. I slap him on the arm like he's stupid. "That hurts!" I scream in my loudest voice. He sighs and nods. "I know. I'm sorry. I just don't want someone to come and attack you. We didn't get any weapons." He apologizes. Blood drips onto the dirt and Gale's shoes. I watch the dead mutt on the floor, it's eyes still open, it's mouth still in a barking form. Wiress hobbles over to us and examines the wound.
"That's fixable." She whispers. I watch her creep up to the plants and grab a giant leaf off of one. She spits all over it and wraps it around my wound, tying it with her hair band. the wound immediately feels better and I thank Wiress.
"Simple trick. These plants are perfect." She smiles, then gazes off suddenly, as if she forgot where she was. "Where's Beetee?" She asks again. I feel bad for her. She really must love this Beetee person if she keeps calling his name. I wonder where he is. I wonder if he was one of the ones who got killed by the mutts. I'll find out tonight.
"Wiress," I say, placing a hand on her shoulder, "We'll find Beetee. We'll find him. Don't worry." She smiles and asks where he is. Gale pulls me aside.
"We can't promise her anything like that. This could be a trap." He says. I glance at her, milling around, picking up leaves and watching them flutter away, before turning back to Gale.
"She's harmless. Look at her." I say back. "She really misses Beetee and why should we stop them from being together? I survived this once, Gale." He leans in closer. "Once. What if you don't this time?" He asks. I tilt my head to the side. "I thought you weren't going to let that happen?" I ask with a smirk. He sighs and I turn back to Wiress. "C'mon, let's go find shelter." I say. Looking at the sky, I can already tell it's going to start raining soon, and knowing the Capitol, it'll be interesting.
We walk for what feels like hours. There are no crevices, no trees good enough to support Wiress, nothing. Gale finally stops in an area similar to the one I stayed in with Kelin and Peeta, when we found the poisonous water trees.
"Alright, that's it, we're stopping here." He says. "I won't go any further." I survey the area, and finally nod my head in approval. "Alright. We'll rest here." I don't really want to stay here, but I can tell Gale needs to sleep. It's just about to get dark enough for the anthem to start playing, so I sit somewhere comfortable on the ground.
The anthem draws my attention to the sky. I wait silently for the three unlucky tributes' faces to flash across the screen. First is the male from district two, Cleff. I wonder how close him and Enobaria were. It's hard to believe that both from two, a career district, are already gone. Next is Cecilia from eight. She has beautiful skin, and her long flowy hair almost covers her face. I remember when I watched her get reaped, three screaming kids were clinging to her, begging her not to go. I can't imagine how they feel right now. Finally, I see Seeder, from District eleven flash on the screen. I can't stop staring at her beautiful golden brown eyes. Aside from the fact that she looks like she could live in District twelve, she reminds me so much of Rue. The anthem plays again, and then the sky is dark.
"It's so sad." I whisper. I see Gale's figure shrug his shoulders. "It's what happens." He whispers back. "I know, but it's sad. These people at home root for everyone and then they see them die out of the blue." I tell him. I glance at Wiress and she's already asleep. Gale yawns, and I offer to take the first watch.
