The officer behind the desk handed me the clothes I came in with. It wouldn't fit me though. So it was pointless to give them to me. I had nothing when I came in and had nothing when I came out. The glaring sun was harsh on my eyes when I walked out the prison gate. The gate closed behind me, signaling my freedom. A loud whoop came from my mouth as I jumped around happily.
I was finally free.
I had been walking around aimlessly for a while, trying to somehow end up in the city. I thought about my next steps now that I was free. Maybe I could find Joey and we can get the gang together again.
The smooth rumble of a car engine interrupted my thoughts as an expensive looking car pulled up next to me. The tinted window rolled down just enough to see a man's dark eyes. "Get in." He ordered. I contemplated for a second. Should I go with this guy? I mean, I'm not stupid enough to go with strangers but I have nowhere to go. With that thought in mind, I opened the door and got in the car. Guess I am stupid.
The car had a modern look, at least for me it was. My hand ran against the smooth, black leather seats before turning my eyes to a touch screen interface on the dashboard. I wandered my curious eyes around the car in admiration until the man spoke up. "You like it? You can have your own if you want." I looked at the man with disbelief. "Who are you? Are you serious?" He nodded.
"Michael Grey, and yes, I'm serious."
"What do I have to do?" This obviously came with a price and I wasn't sure if I wanted to know what it was. What if he's in the mafia? I gasped internally. "You would have to work for me." I slowly took it in. "What job would I be doing?"
"You would be a bodyguard and...collect certain objects for me. You're also to eliminate those who get in your way." What? He wanted me to steal for him? Not only that...but kill? "Why did you choose me? What makes you think I will work for you? Do you know why I was in prison? For stealing." I fired off questions at him. The man pulled out an orange folder and handed it to me. "I've read your file. You live nowhere, am I correct?" I clenched my jaw tightly. Where did he get all of this? "Yeah." His smile was unnerving. Who is this man? Where did he find me? "Then you will do the job. In there, is the target's file, my number card and your I.D. The instructions for this job are in there also. Oh, and here." A slightly heavy envelope was dropped in my lap. "That's ten grand. Finish the job and you'll get the rest." Is he serious? Ten thousand dollars?
The car stopped at a blue apartment building. It was several stories high and looked expensive.
"This is your stop." I opened the car door then turned to the driver. "Thank you." He just nodded while keeping a straight face. I gently slammed the door and the car drove off. I entered into the building and strolled up to a clerk at the front desk.
"Excuse me, do you have an apartment for rent?" The clerk glanced at me.
"What kind of apartment would you like?" I thought about it. "Can I see what a one bedroom, and one bathroom would look like?" The woman nodded and showed me an apartment on 6th floor. It looked beautiful. The living room rug had a cow skin pattern and a glass table stood over it. The TV was a flat screen and suspended on the wall. This apartment was gorgeous.
The clerk told me about the benefits of renting here. "Here, we have a pool and a gym that you can use any time you like. We also have a theater that you can rent out and a game room." I gaped. This was amazing. How had my luck changed so much? "How much would this apartment be a month?" I walked into one of the rooms and she followed me. "The rent here for a one bedroom one bathroom is $3,291 a month." I took a double take. 3,000 dollars? Damn. I didn't know if my salary from whatever job I had gotten myself into would cover that.
"Can I get this apartment now?" She nodded. "Sure just show me an I.D, your credit and a form of payment and you will be ready to sign your lease." I followed her to the front desk and showed her my I.D from the envelope I was given. She was typing something on the computer when she frowned.
"Well, I've made a mistake here. Come with me." I followed her down 4 flights of stairs to a sub level where I saw a metal door. It was protected by a keypad to the right of it. "The code is 358617. Think you can remember that?" I nodded and we walked into the room. "Holy...shít." I cursed lowly.
It was a room full of weapons. Every weapon you can think of: guns, swords, knives, and blunt weapons. This was criminal heaven. "You don't have to pay to live here as you are working for the owner of this apartment building. This room is yours to use for missions. Please put the weapons back when you're done using them." She handed me a weird looking device. "This is how you'll get into your apartment. It's harder for thieves to copy it."
The clerk took me back up to my apartment and said, "Enjoy your stay here." I opened up my door and closed it, locking it behind me. My thoughts ran as I slipped off my clothes and hopped in the shower. The hot water trickled down my skin as I reveled in showering alone for once. Without lingering eyes from other women. I had gotten used to it but it felt nice to be alone.
After leaving the shower, I found some clothes in the drawer. They looked new and still had the tags on them. I slipped a t-shirt and a sweatpants on and flopped on my bed, falling asleep quickly. What the hell did I get myself into?
