Eliza sat in the booth, slowly twisting her hair and staring out the window. The café was bustling with people as her eyes scanned the outside, trying to spot Maria. She wasn't used to the nervousness of first dates and readjusted her sapphire dress while continuing to stare.
It took Eliza a good few months to work up the confidence to ask her out, much to the encouragement of her sisters. With how close the two had become over the year, the date wouldn't be much different than when they normally hung out.
A smile broke out on Eliza's face as Maria walked in wearing skinny jeans and a red crop top.
"Sorry, have you been waiting long?" She asked while sitting down.
Eliza shook her head, "Ready to order, your majesty?"
Maria laughed and picked up a napkin. The menus were printed on them, which Maria always joked was "revolutionary" and made her feel "like royalty" and "the best thing ever made"
"Ready if you are, Madame." Maria proclaimed giving a curtsy, the both of them chuckling.
Eliza got her usual order of a hashbrown casserole and a caramel frappuccino. Maria decided on a french toast croissant and the same drink.
"This place always reminds me of the coffee shop I worked at in my hometown." Maria reminisced.
"I can't imagine you busting tables." Eliza commented.
"Oh yeah," Maria replied chuckling, "I actually worked there to pay back the owner. I may or may not have broken a bookcase."
"How'd that happen?" Eliza blurted out, intrigued.
"I was confronting some sleaze who was harassing my friend and he shoved me and...down the case went." Maria explained.
"Some guy actually had the nerve to touch you?" Eliza huffed.
"Yeah, so it technically wasn't my fault, but I felt bad about the whole thing." Maria said.
The waiter came with their order and Maria thanked them before continuing.
"So what about you? You've ever done something 'bad'?" Maria asked with finger quotes and a sly smile.
"Well, there was this one time..." Eliza admitted, taking a sip of her drink.
"Oh do tell." Maria replied.
"Once, when I was a junior in high school there was this girl who harassed Peggy all the time. It was around the same time that Peggy came out as genderfluid, so you can imagine the types of stuff they said." Eliza explained.
"We reported to the school once they started to grow more frequent, but they did nothing," Eliza said, "The last straw was when Peggy rushed to Angelica and I, in tears, because the girl cut her ponytail off."
"Woah," Maria said shocked, "Seems a little juvenile, don't you think?"
"My thoughts exactly. But poor Peggy sobbed and pleaded but still the school did nothing." Eliza said somberly, "Apparently since it wasn't a 'physical altercation' and her friends came to her defense, nothing was done."
"That sounds terrible, and yet another reason I don't like the cookie cutter factory that is the American education system." Maria said, rolling her eyes.
"Anyway, we were walking to lunch the next day and right away the girl shoved Peggy and spat at her," Eliza sighed, "So I may have, sorta, kinda...shoved her back..."
"Yeah, and?"
"Punches may have been thrown." Eliza whispered quietly.
"You got into a fight!?" Maria said, cackling.
