The first thing I noticed when we arrived at home was a missing lamppost along with the head teachers’ car. Either the head teacher had come and taken it to get it repaired or somebody had decided that that junk was worth stealing. Mum stared at the empty spot, where the lamppost once was, very strangely and then put on a blank face before turning to me.

“What, I have no idea what happened.”

“Is that so?” She rolled her eyes, put her anger and frustration to a side and walked forward to the front door after locking the car.

I shrugged my shoulders and followed behind her, kicking the tiny stones in my way as I walked. As we went closer to the front door, both of us exchanged a puzzled look before returning our eyes at the two tiny figures sat on our doorstep as if it were the ideal place to hook and meet people. The boy had brown hair that matched with his wide eyes whereas the girl had a lighter shade of brown of hair that almost matched with her golden brown skin. I laughed when I spotted the scared expression on the boys face as the girl spoke loudly and gestured her hands everywhere.

I could see why he was looking frightened. The way she swung her arms here and there, I almost thought she would make his pointy nose turn blunt.

“-And there was a huge explosion!” she exclaimed and took in a deep breath before she continue. “I thought it was a bomb! But I found out it was my sister trying to dance with a mop.”

“Wow,” the boy said, lamely. “How is that supposed to make a loud noise?”

“Because she was in the kitchen, silly! She slipped, fell onto the fridge, which was open, and everything began to shake and shake and shake and shake and-”

“I get it! It was shaking,” the boy exasperated.

“Yeah, so it was shaking and boom! Everything came out and crashed on the floor. It was funny seeing her and Moppy-Boo – that’s the name of her mop boyfriend – on the floor with milk and cheese all over her.”

The girl let out a loud laugh and shook her head, as if she was remembering how ridiculous it was.

“Ha, haha,” the boy faked and shifted slightly away from her.

He turned his head towards us when he noticed there were two shadows falling over him, gleamed and then jumped up with excitement and slight relief that he finally had an excuse to run away from her. “Mum’s home!” He run and opened his arms to give mum a hug.

          “Hey baby,” mum said, quietly.

“Shh, don’t call me that here. That girl will laugh at me,” he said and slyly turned to look at her. When she noticed him looking back at her, she waved energetically and smiled.

Mum laughed softly and held him tightly. “I’m sorry, Jamie,” she corrected with a smile. Suddenly the smile faded into a very confused look along with mine. “Hold on, why are you sitting in front of the door? Didn’t anybody pick you up?” Mum asked in an alarming voice

“I waited for grandpa, but he never turned up,” Jamie explained in his innocent voice.

Mum looked down onto the ground and sighed and for a moment I thought she was going to burst into tears; instead her lips curled up, forming a smile as she ran her hand through Jamie’s hair.
