Jordan's P.O.V.
I felt a gash on my head, probably from when I hit my forehead on the wheel. It made me dizzy and I was seeing double. Lyra was screaming weakly for help, searching for me. I must have been under something, because she was in tears and couldn't find me. I remembered my vision ebbing away as she collapsed in tears and screamed one last time before becoming silent. Then it all went black.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
I woke to the sound of many annoying beeps. "Ugh," I growled, trying to sit up. But I was held down. "What the?"
A bunch of nurses ran into the room. "He's awake!" one shouted. Then a doctor ran in and took some tubes off my arms.
I flexed my wrists, happy to know I could move something. The doctor seemed happy too. "Well, Jordan, nothing's broken. You'll be alright," he said. "You can be sent home today if you take it easy here for a few hours."
Suddenly I remembered something. Lyra, that black haired girl with violet eyes! "Is Lyra okay?" I asked quickly.
"Oh, the girl in the car with you," the doctor replied slowly, scratching the back of his head and refusing to make eye contact with me. "She's...you can go see for yourself."
I felt nervous. The doctor didn't even know if she was okay. Agh, what have I done?
Slowly, the nurses took off the tubes holding me down on the bed. I got up, feeling weak and anxious. The doctor gave me a wristwatch with the beeper on it. I thanked him and a nurse lead me down the hall. She wouldn't look at me, either.
We stopped at a white door and the nurse opened it. I nodded a thank you to her and went in. There were two people in there, a man and a woman. The man had messy blonde hair and a short beard. The woman had shirt black hair and tears in her eyes. I saw Lyra asleep in the bed with some cuts on her face and arms.
The people stared at me. "You must be Jordan," the man said. The woman just blew her nose. The man stretched his hand out to me. "I'm Harold, Lyra's...adoptive father." he said.
I shook his hand. "Ah, nice to meet you. So, Lyra's parents are...dead?"
The woman started crying. I knew what I said was really stupid and I wanted to take it back. "I'm so sorry for saying that..." I explained.
Harold sighed. "She's not upset with you. It's...about Lyra."
I felt terrified for a second. "Is she going to live?!" I asked frantically.
"Of course, of course," Harold assured me. "It's just...she's not like other people."
I looked at him. So Lyra has a few...problems, who cares? "I don't understand."
"Lyra's not human."
STORY INTERRUPTION
Okay, so I'm adding a new character to this. Her name is Erica, and she's a ten year old orphaned girl living in the Santa Barbara orphanage, which is right next to the hospital. Her P.O.V. is in this. :3
Erica's P.O.V
I ran down the hallway, crossing my fingers that I'd get there early enough to get something to eat. The other girls pushed me and tripped me, obviously having the same idea. When I got to the lunchroom, most of the other girls were already gobbling up their food. I sighed. This was the third day I had went without food.
"Erica!" someone called. I looked around. No one wanted me to sit with them, who was calling?
"Erica!" the voice called again. I sighed when I saw who it was. Jessica, the volunteer who helped out here, was calling. She probably just wanted to tell me that I needed to clean up after. It was Tuesday, the day I clean up.
