Chapter Twenty Seven

Silence.

That was the dominating sound in Dan's life following his return home from hospital. The day he was released Gerard clapped a hand on his shoulder and set up a follow up appointment, one of many that Dan refused to show up to. Amethyst was there when they got home, packing baby things away. They let her, aside from a small pink blanket that Dan had bought for Theodosia to be carried home in. He held it and cried,and her and Phil couldn't bare to take it from him.

After almost a month, Phil came in early from work, crystallised rain droplets clinging to his hair and a smile in place on his lips as he looked at Dan excitedly. "What Phil?" He asked, and Phil took Dan's hand, pulling him from the couch. "I have a surprise for you." He said, and Dan raised an eyebrow as they walked outside into the now freezing rain to Phil's car. "What?" Dan asked, and the older just opened the car door, ushering Dan inside. "Where are we going?"
"A surprise."
"That's not a place."
"Oh well. It is now." Phil said with a grin, and started the car up, driving away from the house towards where Amethyst and Alex moved.
"Ame's house isn't a surprise Phil."
"It is when you see what's there." He said cheekily, and Dan rolled his eyes smiling for the first time since he left the hospital.

"Your here!" Alex yelled when they pulled up, and Danielle came crawling out the front door, Amethyst on her heels. "Young lady slow down!" She called, scooping up the one year old and giving her a kiss.
"Hey guys." She waved, and Dan waved back, hugging his best friend and his goddaughter quickly.
"Why are we here?"
"You'll see. Come on let's go." Amethyst said, ushering him inside.

As soon as he crossed the threshold, a barking noise could be heard for the back of the house. Before he could say anything, Phil stepped behind him, arms going around his waist and chin on his shoulder. "I hope you like him. I know he won't replace her, and that's not why I got him. I just figured our life could use some happiness." He whispered, as Amethyst came into the room with a wriggling puppy in her arms, it's fur a light blonde colour and it's ears floppy like its paws. "A dog?" Dan asked, completely stunned as Amethyst sat the puppy down and it made a beeline for the two. "A dog." Phil confirmed as the brunette picked the dog up, his eyes wide.
"What do you wanna name it?" Ph asked quietly, and Dan turned with a small smile as the puppy licked his face, covering him in slobber. "Lin."
"Lin?"
"Yep, Lin."
"Is it a boy?" Amethyst asked, and Dan shrugged, checking quickly. "Nope. A girl." He whispered, and gave her nose a small kiss before turning to kiss Phil, the first time since the day Theodosia decided to come into the world, and the older man responded instantly.
"Thanks for keeping her for us." Phil said once he was able to breathe, and the girl waved her hand. "Take her home. Train her. Good luck." She smiled, and Dan hugged her tightly before taking Phil's hand and walking out, Lin in his other arm, her nose nestled in the crook of his neck as they walked out.

"Thank you." Dan whispered when they got in the car, and Phil shook his head. "Don't thank me yet." He grinned, and like their first date, Dan took his hand, interlocking tier fingers, and for that moment, everything seemed like it was okay.
