"Sirena, darling. Where were you all night? I've been trying to get a hold of you. You weren't off with one of the Manson boys, were you? I told you they're dangerous! Good looks do not equal to a good personality! I don't want you hanging out with thugs!" My mother rambles as I enter the house.
"Breathe, mother." I try to calm her down. "And don't worry, I wasn't with the Manson boys. I told you I was never going see Chuck Manson again after we broke up."
"Okay, darling. I have a dress rehearsal tonight and you father has plans with Miriam so you'll be on your own." She snaps her fingers and her coat comes flying to her.
"Mom! Someone might see you!" I warn her.
"Don't worry, love. Lolita is harmless." She informs me. Lolita is our maid.
"Where are you going?" I ask her.
"Out with Bruce. We're going for brunch!" She says excitedly. Did I mention that my parents have open marriage? They're both dating several people, Miriam and Bruce, being two of them.
"Have fun!" If having an open marriage makes them happy, who am I to complain?
"Hola Lolita!" I grin.
"¡Eres asquerosa, puta! (You're disgusting, bitch!)" She yells.
"Great to see you too!" My Spanish is a little rusty.
"Hey kiddo!" My dad runs up to me with giant hedge trimmers.
"Jeez dad! Are you trying to kill me?" I back away as he tries to hug me.
"Oops!" He puts down the trimmers. I look down at him. He's at least four inches shorter than me. He's almost bald with only a couple of little white strands of hair popping out. He's only seven years older than my mother but looks like he's old enough to be her father. Luckily for me, Sirens age pretty well. My mom is almost 45 but looks like she's 30. My dad is 52 and looks like he's...55 maybe? He's a cute little old man.
"Where's Esmeralda?" He asks.
"Out with Bruce." I say.
"Ah, and where were you all night? Any cool parties that I wasn't invited to? I wish you'd take me to more parties. I'm a celebrity! Imagine how many social points that would win you." He gloats.
"You're a celebrity gardener, dad." I laugh.
"That's close enough." He wrinkles his nose.
"Uh huh. See ya, dad." I walk up to my room.
It's a mess as usual. Thanks for nothing, Lolita. I snap my fingers and everything is back in place and my room looks cleaner than ever. "Now that's better." I say to myself.
"It really is! That mess was starting to make me sick." I hear a voice say from behind me. I turn around to see a grey, thin young girl with pigtails.
"For heaven's sake, Carly! I thought I told you to stop haunting my room." I roll my eyes.
"But I like your room, Sirena!" She whines.
"Boo hoo! That's too bad. Now go back to heaven or hell or whatever." I stick my tongue out and she stares at me. "Shoo!"
She finally evaporates into thin air. Kids are so annoying. Especially ghost kids. Can't they just go haunt regular old humans? Why me?!
Mason dropped me home when the manager came to open the café. It was really nice of him but I didn't get a chance to get any information. Luckily, I have the perfect opportunity tonight at the bonfire. He told me he'd be there.
I teleport my human best friend into my room. She's the only person who genuinely seems cool with me being a siren. She totally gets me.
"Jeez, Sirena! I could have been in the shower or something! At least warn me before teleporting me. You know it makes me nauseous." She grumbles. With her blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes, Lucia Evans is just as beautiful as me. And she's human! It's so fascinating.
"Sorry, Lucia. I really need to talk to you!" I explain.
"What is it?" She looks worried.
"Nate tried to kill me last night." I state, without any emotion.
"Holy crap! Are you okay?" She exclaims. I fill her in on what happened.
"So a hot mystery guy saved you?" She smirks.
"Yep. He's going to be at the bonfire tonight and you're coming with me." I say, hoping she won't say no.
"But I have a date with Bruce!" She protests.
"You're dating my mom's boyfriend?" I raise an eyebrow.
"My boyfriend is dating your mom? Oh man!" She thinks for a second.
"Yup."
"Meh, I don't mind." She shrugs.
"Come on, Luce! I can't go alone." I insist.
"Take one of your boy-toys." She suggests.
"I can't go with another guy! Pretty pretty please?" I beg.
"Fine, but only if you poof me some designer dresses later." She says. One of the perks of having magical powers is being able to get whatever I want, whenever I want. Which means I can get the latest couture with the snap of a finger. For free! My magic does have limits though. I can't use too much or I'll exhaust myself and pass out. Or worse. I don't even want to know. Being near the sea helps though. It makes me more powerful.
"Deal." I accept.
Oh boy. Tonight better be eventful.
