Chapter Twelve (Baithazar)
Every nerve in my body was shot. I was in pain, and I didn't know what to do. There seemed to be no end. All I knew was that this had something to do with Gaelan. His pain was ringing through my body. What could he be doing now that was this painful?
Go to him, my wolf shouted in my head.
I took off. There was nothing that could stop me now, and I was determined to end this pain coursing through my body. As the trees passed me by, whizzing past like a fly, I could only think of the things that had been happening to me. Everything that has happened up until now--my torture from the previous alpha, the death of my parents, the loss of my closest friends, all my fault. I did what I did and now I have to pay the price. Maybe this is the price that I have to pay. I broke the most sacred code of the werewolf, and now I must pay the price for my actions.
This was probably my punishment. I had to suffer being with a man as my mate in order to atone for my actions. Couldn't I just catch a break? Did everything have to be so difficult for me?
Okay, I would give him a chance. It couldn't be any worse than being locked up and tortured, could it?
I made it to the house, the one where I'd been experiencing the emotional rollercoaster of life within the last week. Immediately after entering, I felt it. I could feel the energy surrounding the place, constricting my entire being, and it was then that I knew what Gaelan was doing. He was trying to sever our bond as soulmates.
I took off. I ran for my life to where I knew our room was. I had to give this a real chance, there had to be a reason why we were paired together. I passed door after door in this mansion-like house, but it took forever until I finally reached the door that he was behind.
I shoved it open, and there he was. His body was lying on the bed, drenched in sweat. He was panting and squirming around. He was whispering something, and I could feel my right arm start to tingle. I looked down at it, and there was a red mark of a leopard pulsing in and out of existence. If I wasn't seeing this with my own eyes, I didn't know if I would have believed it.
This is what my mark will look like, after we finally mate.
Focus! My wolf shouted in my head.
I moved to the bed and put my hand on his head. He was burning up. I'd never seen anything like this before. I didn't know what to do to stop him. "Gaelan. Come back to me." I called to him. It didn't work.
"What do I do to get you to stop this? I want to try. Give me one more chance to make everything right. Please." My head was next to his, my lips pressed against his ear. I hoped that this was getting to him, somehow.
It wasn't working. I waited a few moments, but he was still whispering something as softly as he could. I growled in frustration. How was I supposed to make this stop, and make him wake up?!
Go to him.
"I'm already here. He's right in front of me."
Go into his soul, you know the way.
"No I don't. Before being set free from that basement, I hadn't ever met him."
That's not true. He visited you many times in spirit. He's what kept us sane and alive.
"What? I don't understand."
He came to us, many times. He cared for us in spirit and gave us his power to keep us alive. Without his aid, we would not be here.
"Why don't I remember this?"
You were too exhausted. You took whatever power was available to survive and did not care where it was coming from.
I didn't know this. I sighed. This was getting too complicated and confusing. "So how do I return the favor and enter his soul?"
You must close your eyes, and focus on his energy.
I closed my eyes. I put my hand on his forehead and took a deep breath. Breathing deeply, I focused on his being. I tapped into my wolf's power and called for his leopard. I could sense it, but somehow it was far away. I couldn't reach her. She too far. I pushed further, trying my best to get to her, and I could hear her roaring--calling for me. She needed me too.
It felt like swimming. I was in a sea of consciousness and I had to make my way over to her. I did the swimming motions, and pushed as hard as I could, but it wasn't working. There was such a huge distance and tension between me and her. I didn't know if I could get to her. This was too difficult, but with every second passing I could feel the power that was dripping from her. I could feel that she was locked up, pushed to the farthest part of the soul. She couldn't move or do anything, and she was crying. She was sad at what Gaelan was about to do and she couldn't stop him.
I kept pushing and pushing, the pain in my arm getting worse by the minute. The stakes were laid in front of me. Reach the place I had to be or lose the man that was destined to be by my side and would understand my needs and wants.
No matter how many strokes I made, trying to swim in this dense energy, it just wasn't working, and I wasn't getting anywhere. I looked around to see if there anything I could use to propel forward, but there was nothing.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. That's when I realized that I could still hear Gaelan's murmuring. I'm a moron.
I'd literally been calling this a "sea of consciousness" and I was literally swimming in it. I was already here.
"Gaelan." The murmuring stopped. "Gaelan. Please. Come talk to me." I got no response. "Gaelan, I'm sorry. Please come back. I need you. Please talk to me."
"Why? You already said that you don't want me. I get it. You don't need to tell me again." The voice was coming from behind me.
I turned around to see him floating naked. "That's not it. I was just shocked, because I wasn't interested in men and seeing you as my mate was jarring. Now though, I can smell you and feel that you're my mate."
"Why did you run? I could see you leave." He was looking down. He couldn't look me in the eyes, and now I had to do damage control, because I wanted this to work out. I needed to make this happen.
"I ran because I was scared and confused. Everything was happening so fast, and I need it to slow down. That's why I shouted that I needed some space. I just felt like everything was closing in on me again and like I was back in the basement of my old Alpha's home."
He let out a deep breath, and finally looked up. His eyes connected with mine, and they were so clear.
"Will...will you stay?" His voice was small, and precious.
"Yes." He nodded and floated closer to me, and I wrapped my arms around his spiritual form.
