Newton A.F.SCAMANDER

☽☽☽

Halloween was fast approaching which the bitter cold of October would be replaced by the feeling that only November could give; a state of excitement as you waited for the boring month to pass and Christmas to come. It was like the feeling second years get before coming back to Hogwarts.

On Friday-Halloween-there was to be countless celebrations, for all of which Leonora was excited. She had told Newt that she had planned to talk to Leta when they were allowed to sit at any table they pleased.

Right now Newt was just waiting on Leonoras arrival, waiting at the usual spot by the lake. The wind howled in his ears and nipped at his skin as he tried to bury his face in his scarf, before casting Bluebell Flames into a jar he kept in his bag for when it got too chilly.

As he set the jar down, he didn't notice Leonora jogging towards him, hair swinging in a plait behind her as she grinned.

"Sorry I'm late, I wanted to get a little something before I came down here." She said as she sat down, turning her bag out of view as she took something out of it. Newt watched her warily as she turned back around, but ultimately felt guilty for his private accusations as she handed him three chocolate frogs.

"Surprise!" She grinned, taking one out of her bag to eat as well, "I nabbed some from the Great Hall as I passed, just dodged a broom from a house elf, too." She grumbled the last part, rubbing the back of her head with a slight hiss.

"Why?"

"Well you said you wouldn't mind someone giving you chocolate frogs so why not?"Leonora said, and Newt could see that as she turned to her bag for a pointless rummage, her cheeks reddened.

"Well," Said Leonora, brushing the stray hairs from the side of her jaw, green eyes squinting in the sun. Newt lifted his head to her.

"What's wrong?" He asked, sensing something was wrong with the usually jovial Gryffindor as she fiddled with the ends of her jumper.

She turned to him, a surprised look on her face before turning to smile at the ground with a sigh, turning her attention to picking out the grass from the hill.

"My sisters told my parents about you,"

He suddenly understood her worry; this was supposed to be a school thing, not 'oh, my parents know you exist so we're going to lie to them as well'. The Diggorys' were known for being close; if you offend one, you offended them all.

"Oh," He suddenly felt very bad for making her do this for him, but couldn't bring himself to call it off. He enjoyed her company more than he could admit and didn't want to ruin it.

"And, I'm afraid they might be mad at me for not telling them." She said, turning to face him with disappointment written across her features. "Now they'll want to meet you and it'll be awkward because they'll be judging our 'love' based on how we act around them and-," Leonora suddenly stopped as Newt placed a hand on hers, halting her from tearing more grass from the ground.

"Look, we'll take this one step at a time, okay? Have you heard anything from them since they've found out?" He asked, receiving a shake of her head as a reply-she was too busy staring at her hand under his that was feeling suddenly very warm.

"Well not to worry, if they ask to meet me and you want me to - I'll meet them. We'll just act like we normally do in front of people, okay? It'll be fine and if they don't think we'll last because we're not in love anyway, right?"

Leonora smiled, nodding. "I don't actually know why I was so worried, if they don't think we're in love I suppose it would be better..."

Newt grinned, happy to see her smile again, and slid a chocolate frog into her now empty hands to make up for the loss of contact.

The two sat for a while chatting under the bright autumn sun until their chocolate frogs ran out, and only then did they make their way apart, each of them feeling better than they had before.
