Chapter 10
“Aurora!” a voice yells.
I sit up from my bed, my alarm clock screaming hell. I slam my fist onto the snooze and sit there, staring at my hands.
“I didn’t want you to sleep through it” the voice says.
Hunter.
“Thanks” I mumble, not looking up. “How did I get to my bed?”
“I carried you.”
“Thanks. I guess”
I get up, locking the bathroom door behind me. Why won’t he leave? There has to be a way for him to leave.
I showered, and threw on my clothes, drying my hair, slapping on some make-up.
“I forgot how long girls take to get ready” Hunter says quietly from the doorway.
I roll my eyes. “I don’t take long just 20 minutes”
He smiles smugly.
“Why are you smiling?” I ask as I run into the kitchen to pack my backpack.
“I don’t know. You remind me of Emma I guess”
I snort. “Emma and I are nothing alike”
“How would you know? You’ve never talked to her for long.” he said.
I stop for a moment. It was true. I’ve never really gotten to know her.
“Whatever” I grumble, throwing my backpack over my shoulder. I walked out the door into the warm May air and walked to the bus stop.
“It’s been six months” Hunter said.
“Thanks for reminding me. Not like I don’t think about it every day”
We stood quietly at the bus stop, hearing the birds chirping.
“I know this is going to sound stupid but I’m nervous” He said.
“Your right that was really stupid”
“You try being dead Aurora. Try being away from your friends and family and everyone you’ve ever loved and talked to. Try it. It sucks and I have this opportunity to see them again.” Hunter snarls.
I bit my lip to stop me from crying. You’re being a bitch. He died for you and you’re treating him like a criminal. You should be the one dead.
“I’m sorry-sorry” I mumble
Can you get anymore pathetic?
The bus pulls up and I climb onto it, hoping Hunter would follow.
He did. Of course.
“Aurora!” Amber called.
Amber sat in the back with all the “cool kids”, pretty much the people who weren’t majorly popular but didn’t have to sit in the parking lot to eat lunch because they were afraid to sit in the lunch room. I walk back to her, plastering a smile on my face.
“Hey guys” I said.
“Hey” they chorused back.
“I texted you yesterday why didn’t you respond?” Amber asked.
“I was busy, homework” I lied.
“’Homework’” Hunter said. He sat adjacent from everyone, looking seriously uncomfortable.
I guess he was used to riding in a car with his sister, Jason and Jason’s older brother, Max instead of 30+ kids on a small school bus.
Welcome to not being popular Hunter.
I shot him a look.
“There’s a party Friday… I know you’re not much into them but please please Aurora, nothing bad will happen, okay? I really don’t want to spend another night in. Not that it bothers me but-“
“Amber if I say yes will you shut up?” I asked.
Amber grinned.
“Hell yeah”
I sigh.
“Fine”
I swear I could see Hunter smile.
