Chapter 9
November 21,2013
3:22pm
“Hunter was an amazing, loving-and, perfect brother. He will be deeply missed by everyone.” Juliet sobbed.
It was a sea of black at the funeral home.
Amber was sober. Jason put on a brave face. Hunter was dead.
I was alive.
9:34am.
That time will haunt me forever.
Emma screaming her head off, stomping, crying. Ana trying to comfort her.
Juliet sinking to the floor, hiding her tears.
Jason just sat there, looking at his hands.
Amber slumped over.
And me?
I don’t remember.
I remember running.
Running to the next town.
And the next,
And the next.
My legs taking me anywhere they wanted to go.
My face covered in tears.
My hair hanging in my face.
I collapse at a bus stop.
I didn’t know where I was.
Don’t cry. Crying is weak. You’re weak. Stop. If you cry then you’re selfish. It’s not about you.
I sat there for hours.
“AUORA” a voice screamed.
It was my mother.
I started shaking.
Maybe from relief.
Maybe from the cold fall air.
Maybe from my heart breaking.
She ran towards me, wrapping me in a hug.
Crying.
I felt nothing.
“Aurora” someone whispers from next to me.
Emma.
I look over at her. Her black veil covered her blue eyes which once held happiness. Now all they had left was nothing. There was no special sparkle in them anymore.
“Can you go up and talk-talk a bit about…” Emma trailed off.
I felt my heart drop even further out of my chest.
I shake my head.
“I’m sorry Emma.”
Emma nods and squeezes my hand. Even though we have no connection. Even though we’ve never said more than 4 sentences to each other ever. That’s what happens when you lose everything. You regret taking it for granted.
His coffin was navy blue. That was Hunter’s favorite color. People cried. Everyone cried. Everyone left flowers at his grave.
Everyone but me.
Flowers had always seemed so traditional and boring to me. They died. They went away after a couple of weeks.
So I thought that I would think about what I would put there.
And to this day I still haven’t put anything on his grave.
