"Helloooo," Ruby smiled through the phone. Cameron was out of town for work and she had been missing him something terrible. The fact that he landed a contract to be the architect on some new corporate buildings had Cameron ecstatic.
"What up babe, I miss you," Cam replied smiling through the phone, he loved him some Ruby.
"I miss you more. I'm so ready for you to come back home."
"Oh yeah? What, you ready to discuss a wedding date?"
"Cam," Ruby sighed not really trying to have that conversation at the moment.
Cameron had been pressing her about a date since the day he proposed. The truth of the matter was, Ruby wasn't sure if she wanted to be married.
Eventually, she wanted the picket fence with kids and a dog, but she never pictured any of that with Cameron. Ruby didn't have the courage to tell him that though.
Cam was a great guy. He was everything most girls hoped for in a guy. He was attentive, good looking, and his sex was good. That didn't take away from the fact that something was missing.
Cam sighed. "It's been two years Ruby. How long do you plan to stay engaged before we actually walk down the aisle? I feel like I'm doing everything I'm supposed to. My family loves you, I love you, what's the problem?" He questioned growing agitated.
"I'm just not ready Cam! What's the big deal? A lot of people have long engagements. I just want to have my ducks in a row by the time we actually take that leap."
"Have your ducks in a row? Ruby, we're not kids! We're both college graduates with careers. You saying your priorities aren't aligned is a bunch of bullshit. You're definitely gonna have to come better than that." Cam argued.
"I don't know what you want me to say, Cam, I'm just not ready." Ruby sighed.
"I haven't even met your family yet Ruby. Outside of speaking to your mom on the phone, I'm clueless as to what anyone looks like. How do you think that makes me feel? Then you keep prolonging a date... Are you hiding something?"
"No! I told you before that my mom is my only family. I don't go home so how would you meet them?"
"That's the problem, Ruby! Who doesn't like to go home? All before you wouldn't dare miss a holiday! Now that you and I are solid, it's like you're constantly coming up with reasons to not go. What is it?" Cam yelled getting angry. He couldn't understand why Ruby was holding back from him. He was open to love and she was backing away.
"Look, I don't think we should do this over the phone. When you get back we'll sit down and discuss everything and come up with something we both can agree on. Deal?" Ruby asked tired of all the bickering.
"Whatever Ruby, I guess that's fine." Cam sighed in defeat. Ruby was so stubborn that he had no choice but to agree with whatever she said. It's not like she'd change her mind.
