Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it,
Like when you know you have something so pure and true
That you have a love that is a perfect, but unexpected fit,
It is that rare type of love sneaking up on you.
So many times I have turned and run,
Fled like a coward in the night.
Life was no longer joyful or fun,
All because I did not stand up and fight.
Yet there you stand steady and true,
Never turning your back on me.
No, matter what I say or do,
How can that be?
How can he cherish me so?
How can he be so kind?
When I have treated him the lowest of the low,
When I have messed with his heart and his mind.
I never meant to cause him such pain,
I wanted to return the love,
But promises I made in vain,
When what I wanted was to be set free and fly like a dove.
All these years
Through all the ups and downs
He knew my fears
He put smiles on my face instead of frowns.
He kept me safe and secure,
He tried to show me from the start
I was not really that weak or insecure,
He held me close to his heart.
He would not let me fall,
Nevertheless, I fought
Yet still he stands there through this all
Now I realize just what I was taught.
Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it,
Like when you know you have something so pure and true
That you have a love that is a perfect, but unexpected fit,
It is that rare type of love sneaking up on you.

PoetryI write from my heart and from life experiences. I have a disabled son who was not expected to make it. Some are about him, some about a abusive situation I was in, some just love.
