Chapter Nineteen - Confession
Gabe liked the way that Chloe was holding onto him, resting her head on his chest and shoulder. He didn't dare pull away or pull her in closer. He just held her there gently and sweetly, smelling her hair that was right under his nose. Even though this night had been hard on Chloe, her elegance and beauty still shined through.
As he noticed a slight erection forming in his pants, his mind turned to a few stray thoughts. The first being, Holy shit! There's a dead body in this room! He then realized that Robert, who was nearly dead, was only a few yards away from where they were standing, Well, I guess that makes two! he thought, You can't get with Chloe in here! Calm down Gabe-buddy!
He then began to think of the last person he saw killed, Kelly. Less than an hour earlier he was actually having sex with that her. His mind briefly turned back to the magnificence of the experience, and his erection became even larger. But then a guilty feeling seemed to race through his chest and he wondered, I hope she doesn't ask about why I took so long with Kelly? But then since Kelly's dead, she probably won't ask. He then wondered, Why do I feel so guilty? It's not like I planned this?
Then another thought pressed through his mind, What if she does want to get it on? This is a life or death situation. She might want to go out happy? So would I! Could I really do it in here with two bodies? He shuddered, Ick! And what if Robert is still alive and wakes up? I don't want him watching us. And what if the killer comes in on us? Shit!
He then realized that he probably shouldn't think about sex, We should probably keep this platonic, at least for now, he told himself, Let's just get out of here alive and then we can get with it back on the mainland, he paused and smelled her hair again, Even all sweaty and gross she smells good! God, this chick is perfect for me!
Regardless of Gabe's thought processes, it was a sweet moment. It was as sweet as any moment between a compatible man and woman who were thrown into a desperate situation and found that they needed each other to get out of it. And this sweet moment quickly gave way to sheer fear and terror when the sound of a hatchet hitting the bolted door in the bathroom reached the ears of these two lovers.
Gabe looked at Chloe and they both cried out. He panicked for a second, uncertain of what to do, but quickly pulled himself together. He had for some reason expected an attack from the front door rather than the bathroom. But he was obviously wrong and turned to find the only way out, the front door.
"This way!" he said to Chloe, pulling her towards the front door by the hand.
Two more chops from the hatchet, hit the door.
Gabe ran to the front door with Chloe straight behind and grabbed the couch, moving it quickly out of the way at a surprising rate. The killer had made a fourth blow to the door, which seemed to have caused it to be opened, for there was a creak and some noise from the bathroom. Gabe finally got the couch enough out of the way of the door that the door would open and he and Chloe quickly slipped out into the hallway.
As they moved out of the room, there could be heard footsteps on the bathroom door, and then the lightest noise of footsteps on the carpet. But Gabe and Chloe were already out the door. They looked both ways. To their left was almost complete blackness and the stairwell to the first floor. To their right was the main room, dining room, and patio, all slightly lit by the faint early morning light rising.
Chloe immediately began to dart to the right, but Gabe caught her by the arm and pulled her to the left, into the darkness.
"Quick," he whispered, "This way!"
