"I'm free!" I exclaimed, laughing softly as I hugged Josephine. "Oh my god, it's done, I can't believe it. We did it."
"We really did it, I know. But I can't believe it either," she chuckled and hugged me back. "Now, are you ready to celebrate? I brought a couple of beers," she told me, opening her handbag and letting me take a glance.
"Beers?" I asked, laughing softly. "It's noon..."
"So?" She teased, shrugging. "We just handed in our theses, if anyone has a problem with them, screw them. We're free, we can do whatever we want."
I laughed and nodded. "Alright, sure. Let's go find a nice spot in the sun and have a beer to celebrate."
She nodded and patted my back. "That's the spirit, that's what I like to hear. I have a perfect spot in mind." She led me along the streets of our univeristy until we got to a small park where we sat down on the grass, on our jackets. "Ah... Freedom."
"Well, for now. It's back to the same old thing in autumn," I told her, opening my beer.
"Wow, you're so optimistic," she chuckled, doing the same. "But I don't want to talk about that now. What I do want to talk about is your phone guy. Brian. How are things with him? Are you still talking?"
With a smile on my face, I nodded. "Yeah... we're still talking."
I hadn't wanted to tell her about Brian in the beginning of the friendship - whatever you wanted to call it - but with how much I was writing Brian, with how much time I spent 'with' him, that didn't go unnoticed by her. To Josephine he was a guy living somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Australia, because I had decided to not tell anyone where he was really living. Brian and I had agreed on that.
"Well?" She asked, waggling her eyebrows. "What are you talking about? Any plans for visiting?"
"I told you that's not possible.." I shook my head and took a sip of my beer.
But Josephine didn't quite believe that. "It's Australia, Mira. That's far away, but not impossible. I told you I'd help you pay for a ticket if you want to go."
But I shook my head. Australia wouldn't be a problem, but 1972 definitely was. "I don't know, we'll see. If I need help I'll tell you, I promise. But it's only been a couple of months, I'm not going to fly halfway across the globe to visit him after two month."
"Alright, fair enough. But one day."
Sighing, I nodded a little. "Yeah... one day." I took another sip of my beer, looking down at the grass. If Brian lived in Australia, I'd already have booked my ticket to visit him, but sadly things were a lot more complicated with him.
"Hey, cheer up. Some day you'll get to see him if you really want to."
I forced myself to smile at her. "Mhm, yes.. he called me Tuesday." Now the smile was genuine, because I remembered our wonderful conversation.
"He called you?" She asked with a big smile on her face. "Like.. actually calling?"
"Well..." I shrugged, still smiling. "Yeah.."
"That's so exciting! What does his voice sound like?"
My smile only grew wider. "He has such a wonderful voice. So sweet and gentle, and... he also played guitar for me."
"On the phone?" Josephine asked surprised.
I nodded and drank a little more of my beer, trying not to seem overly happy. "Yeah... he's a really great guitarist. Really. It was so good to talk to him.."
When I looked at Josephine, she had a huge smile on her face. "You're so falling for him.."
Widening my eyes, I looked at her. "What?! No. I'm not falling for him. That's ridiculous. We've just been writing for a couple of months. We're getting to know each other, sure, but I'm not falling for him."
"Yes, you are, you so are. You know you are. Two months is quite a long time, especially if you're talking nonstop. It's definitely enough time to fall for someone." She nudged my side and chuckled. "You don't have to be embarrassed, Mira."
I didn't say anything, I pretended to be focussed on my beer.
"You're so cute, Mira," she chuckled and lay back on the grass after checking that it was dry.
"I'm not cute," I tried to defend myself, but that effort seemed to have been in vaid, because Josephine just laughed.
"Whatever you say, whatever you say. Anyway. What are we doing tonight?" She asked, squinting because of the sun.
"Tonight? To celebrate? I don't know... is anything on? We can't be the only ones who have something to celebrate." I glanced at her and shrugged, before I was distracted by a sound I had been waiting for impatiently. The well known Thriller-laughter. Immediately my attention was on my phone, and I didn't listen to Josephine anymore.
Hey there. How did it go? Did you hand in your thesis?
Brian. Smiling widely, I sat up straighter and replied to him right away.
Yes! I did it, it's done. I still can't believe it but it's done. Such a relief, you have no idea..
When I looked up again, I saw that Josephine was smirking at me.
"That's him, isn't it?" She teased, sitting up a little. She was so nosy sometimes.
But there was no use trying to hide it, really. She knew me too well. "Yeah," I sighed, nodding a little. "That's him. Sorry."
"Don't apologise," she told me, very obviously amused. "It's okay if you want to talk to your crush."
"He's not my crush, stop it," I told her firmly, shaking my head. However, as much as I tried it, I couldn't keep myself from smiling widely when I got another reply from Brian.
Congratulations! Really. I'm proud of you. You should be proud of yourself. :) What are you up to now?
He was so adorable.
I'm currently relaxing with my friend - Josephine, I mentioned her. She convinced me to have a celebratory beer, so that's what I'm up to. What about you?
It was so good to talk to him, every day.
