DAY 278 (13th Nightal)(December) cont ...

[Merlock Tomes continues his report]

Careful examination of the schene revealed that the four adventurers next went upstairs into a chamber known as the Hall of Audience. This room contained a stone stage with a dark stained table before it with shackles attached. Three smaller ston desks and chairs were arranged between the dias and some pews. There were two doors in the north wall and one in the south and the east.

From the room and the north doors came four oozes, the results of spells that had somehow come to life. There was a Blinding Blot, a Wearying Wurm, a Ghoul Ooze and a Shadow. It appeared that they made short work of the oozes, killing them off quite quickly, but there was some confusion between Arahel and Billitoppe. Arahel was a tiger and she showered Billi in slime delibertly.

He then poked her in the rear with an arrow.

After this they decided to rest, deciding on a more cautious approach. They settled into their magic bedrolls and did their best to relax, despite the occasional harrassing apperition.

Now, I would have said that a room with five entrances was not the best place to set up camp, but this did not seem to bother them (or occur to them).

They spent their time in various persuits. I deduced that Fenrir spent some time attempting to teach Durz how to read and write, judging by the swear words written all over the floor in the common tongue.

It was in the afternoon when the Vampire Spawn that had recently been snoping about in the Spire found them and attacked them.

There were ten of them, one was Ventrexia, the spawn that had hypnotised Fenrir and that he had killed, back to un-life and pleased to get a second chance at him. There was another called Dezominix, another evil character known to me.

The spawn attack in a wave, a much greater threat than the ooze's had been. Fenrir took to the air and started blasting. Durz advanced to attack and Arahel must have been quite a sight, a large tiger breathing fire from her mouth.

During the combat Fenrir managed to accidenlty shoot the tiger in the rear and not long after that Arahel was dominated by one of the Spawn and went to attack Billi.

Then Durz was also dominated and things started to look really grim for the heroes.

Billi cast psi-shield and Dwerry stood as far back as she could.

Then an almost bizarre kind of game started, where Billi, Dwerry and Fenrir would kill the spawn that had dominated either Arahel or Durz, then the spawns would try and dominate the front line fighters again. Durz was dominated at least three times and each time the spawn was killed. During one spell of domination he threw his axe up at Fenrir but it missed.

Fenrir did not escape the blood shed from his perch and was the target of several magic missiles. Arahel was injured the most though and would have died had not the spawn been trying to take them alive for some reason. Another of the spawn summoned a leopard and a skeleton. The tide turned though and the heroes began to push them back as one by one the spawns were killed. Only one survived the carnage and fled down the stairs.

As I said, if the spawn had not been under instructions to take them alive I think the heroes would have not faired so well. Arahel would have certainly died.

Next the heroes looted the battlefield of a decent amount of treasure and not knowning the precice details of the difference between vampires and vampire spawn, took no chances and staked and decapited the corpses before tossing them down the stairs.

They then rested for the remainder of the day, in a small area of the hall that hadn't been splattered in ooze or blood.
