The Star of my Life

The way she looks up at the sky, makes everything in my life all worth while. Especially what I have planned in the future.

"I did picture you shorter."
"That's just rude." Kyle snorts.
"And you." I face Matt, "You are the most handsome man in this room." I play with the hair around his ear before I kiss his lips. "I would say in the world, but I don't know what I'm facing out there." He nods and holds onto my hips. We stare into one anothers eyes, while Kyle speaks with the doctor. I place my forehead upon his and I play with his hand, memorizing his features as if I'd lose this gift any second.
"I almost forgot." Matt pulls away and his lips tug into a smile. He turns and pulls out something in front of me. "This, is a mirror." He places it in my hands. "Turn it over when you're ready." The mirror was a fair amount of weight, more than I thought it'd be. I turn it over and I see a reflection of what's above my head. Of course, I look up to see if it's the same, but when I moved it, it turned on me. I open my mouth, and so does the reflection.
"What is it doing?"
"That's you, Grace." Kyle comes over.
"Me?"
"Yes." Matt agrees.
I have a mixture of the colors in Kyles hair, real light with dark tents. My face comes down into a point, and my lips have a lot more color than the boys. My eyes take my attention off everything else.
"What color did you say they are?"
"Goldish, brown."
"Technically, Hazel." Kyle adds and Matt glares at him.
"Hazel." I repeat, putting down the mirror and placing it on the table.
"We also got another surprise!" Kyle bursts, and I turn towards him and smile. He opens the room's door and in comes a-
"Samson!" Matt presents.
"Samson?" I kneal down and he licks my fingers slowly. "Samson!" He changes to licking my face and I laugh as Matt kneals down too. "He's so handsome." I watch him paddle over to Kyle.
"He's officially a retired dog. They usually retire around seven years, but I pulled some strings."
"Matt, this is amazing!"
"It's only going to get better." Kyle embraces me once more.
"Have you always had this hair cut?"
The boys laugh and I soon follow.
"Now Miss. Allen, you're sight won't last forever. Once you reach about seventy or eighty, it will start to fade- or it will have already faded."
"How come?"
"With the fact that you were born blind, it may come back around. The filling that covered your pupils from seeing might come back, but we don't know."
We set up a series of future appointments to make sure my eyes are still okay. Then they took me out to see everyone.
"Those are nurses." Kyle tells me.
"Nurses? Arn't those like minnie doctors?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess." He laughs. Most smile at me when they pass, going on their busy ways.
"Where's Matt?"
"Right here." I turn and see him standing by a door, all alone. I walk towards him, confused.
"Where'd you go? You have to experience this with me." He takes my hand.
"Can I take you somewhere?" He smiles genuinely.
"I'll go anywhere with you."

"It's so dark in here." I murmur. His hand guides me through the darkness in this hallway. Soon he opened a door and it led to the opening of a staircase. "This looks so shady." He laughs lightly.
"Yeah, now that I think about it, it does." I'm relieved though, the staircase is dimly lit. He takes the lead, going up the forever looking staircase, his firm grip never releasing on my hand. I focus on the movements he makes; the way his jeans tighten as he climbs each step, how his back muscles rub against his shirt, and the little hairs, and scars he has that trace his arms. I look deeply over his scratches; they must be the proof of the exhaustion he comes to my place with.. Kittens scratching, dogs biting. Even rabbits accidently niping his fingertips. I find a recent one, with a scab placed around it. Must be painful.. But he also must be used to it. I notice he slows down a bit and I look up to see why, but instead we lock eyes. He shakes his head and adds a teasing disappointed smile as he keeps going up the staircase. I get tired of climbing these stairs quick, but he keeps assuring me it's worth it.
I want to see Samson again, and Kyle..
"And we're here." He announces as we both stop at the top. There's a door, but it's barely visible, considering there's barely any light up here.
"I feel like we're going to get killed up here, Matt. Like in a horror film. And no one will find our bodies."
"Oh geez, it's not that bad." He kisses my hand, "You ready?" I start getting excited now.. "Just keep your head down and don't look up."
"Okay." I follow instructions, and he opens the door as it creaks with rust. The sound fills the air and a grunt comes from Matt, proving it doesn't want to move. He slides his arm around my waist and pulls me with him. The door must've stayed open, because I never heard it shut. I smell the outdoors, and then I feel the chilled air on my arms. He pulls me with him as I keep my eyes on our feet and the cement. We reach a certain point and he stops, let's go and steps in front of me. "Okay, you can look now." I lift my head, pain trickling down my neck and back, before the throbbing follows. But it all makes it worthwhile.
I notice we're in the dark, almost pitch black, the only light is from the city. We must be on the top of the building... But why?
"Why are we up here?" I turn around trying to find something to look at.
"To look up." He points and I look.
Amazing.
Breathtaking..
Literally takes my breath away.
Almost like someone took a pin point full of paint and placed little circles that glittered in the sky.
"Are these the stars?"
"Yes," His arms wrap around me from behind and his chin rests on my shoulder.
"Thank you. For bringing me up here.. This- the stars- make it all worth the climb." He laughs and let's his grip go. He walks over to the ledge of the building top, looking over the edge. I walk over, occasionally looking up. When I reach his side, I lean my head on his shoulder. "I love you." I mumble, smiling at such a perfect night.
He stays silent.
I can feel a thick aroma forming around him; nervousness.
"What's wrong with-"
"I love you so much," he turns and locks eyes with me. I'm so shocked the words don't come. "Grace, you have caused me to look at the world- at my life- completely differently." He takes my hand, and I memorize his face as if it was the last thing I was ever going to see again. "I don't want to be the person I was before you came into my life.. I don't want to go on another day without you." He looks down at our tied fingers. "Through this surgery, and being able to show you the world.. I'm ready to commit to you, Grace." He let's go of one of my hands and tugs out something in his pocket. He lowers himself onto one knee, into the stance I've only heard about. He clears his throat and opens the little black box in his hands before he looks up at me. "Grace," tears fill my eyes.. Tears are filling his.. "I want to be the only man you see." I'm shaking and smiling beyond what I ever thought I could. "Will you marry-"
"Yes!" I scream, my voice not allowing him to finish. Once he smiles and stands he gently takes my hand, "Yes, I'll marry you, Matthew." I say slower and in a lower voice, so only he can hear. He slides the most beautiful diamond ring on my finger. Ive never even seen a diamond, but I know it's a diamond.. But not just any diamond; it's got stars engraved into the diamond itself. It glitters and shines, just like those above my head. I pull my arms around his neck, embracing his sweet scent.
"I love you Grace." He kisses my lips, soft and gentle.
"I love you, Matthew." I whisper into his ear and hold on tight.

I have my sight.. And I'm engaged.
What more does this world have to offer me now?

I just want to stay right here, here in Matt's arms.. Here in his embrace.
