Prompt: Food fight in the cafeteria that brings Matthew and Stephanie closer. (Thank you to Ehhhhh11 for the suggestion!)
"That'll be four dollars please."
Matthew sighed and scrounged around in his pockets, pulling out the money he needed to pay for his lunch. He handed it over to the lunch lady, collecting his change and taking his food over to an empty table. Sitting down, he opened his Diet Coke and took a sip, evaluating the lunch room as he did so. It was a simple college cafeteria, built such that those students who didn't want to go back and cook could eat cheap food. The prices tended to vary depending on what you wanted to eat but Matthew's usual of a pizza and a Diet Coke remained at a constant four dollars. Various students sat around the room eating their food whilst others studied frantically for whatever test they had coming up in the afternoon.
Taking a mouthful of pizza, Matthew pulled his schedule out of his bag – glancing over the crumpled piece of paper and frowning at what he saw. He had programming after lunch which was normally pretty fun but he really wasn't in the mood for it today. All morning he had been trying to learn his lines for his monologue that he needed to perform next week but he couldn't nail the British accent that it required. It was driving him crazy. No matter how many British celebrities he watched on the television, he couldn't get the accent correct. Sighing, Matthew flicked through the programming textbook to pass the time, hoping to pick up something useful that he could add to the game he and Stephanie were making.
"Hey Matthew, mind if I sit here?"
Stephanie stood in front of the table, a tray of food in one hand and her bag in the other – her chemistry books sticking out of the top. He nodded, gesturing for her to take a seat and putting his book back into his bag so he could focus his attention on her. They had only been in the same class for two months so they hadn't really gotten to know one another very well yet. Stephanie was relatively sure Matthew swung for the other team so she wasn't too worried about him hitting on her but Matthew was quickly becoming aware of how sweet, gorgeous and hilarious she was. He quickly realised he was staring too much and glanced away, a blush creeping across the back of his neck.
"So I brainstorming ideas for the game and I was thinking we could do a parody of the Legend Of Zelda games? I mean the mechanics are pretty fun and aren't super complicated so we could replicate them with a few tweaks. Plus we don't have to make any fancy backgrounds as I highly doubt we have the time to design them from scratch – hey are you alright?"
Matthew realised he had lost focus on the conversation, drifting away into his thoughts and not paying attention to Stephanie. Mentally slapping himself, he tried to think of a response that didn't make him seem like an ass but didn't have time to respond when he was interrupted by a flying orange.
SPLAT.
The orange flew from one corner of the room to the other, hitting the back of one of the history students' heads. Looking around to see who threw it, both Matthew and Stephanie craned their necks to find the perpetrator that had interrupted their conversation. A group of law students sitting in the corner burst out laughing at the history students' reaction, clearly trying to avoid eye contact. The history student stood up and grabbed a slice of pizza off of a friend's tray, lobbing it across the room towards the law student but not making it there. It landed slap bang in the middle of Stephanie's tray, sending the tomato sauce she had placed on the side flying into Matthew's face and covering his shirt with the red liquid.
Stephanie immediately burst out laughing, bending over to catch her breath as she wheezed. Every time she tried to stop giggling, she would look up and see Matthew's unimpressed face dripping with ketchup and would then immediately dissolve into hysteria again. Rising slowly, Matthew grabbed a napkin and wiped his face clean. He then grabbed what was left of Stephanie's yoghurt and launched it across the room at the history students in his attempt for vengeance. Sadly his athletic ability failed him and it landed on the hair of an English student that was trying to study away from all the chaos. Soon, the inevitable happened. A sports student stood on top of the table and bellowed at the top of his lungs:
