I hadn't expected Hailey to make a first impression on this newly found male figure. But here she was, ordering another drink for herself and skipping off alongside the girl that had come up. My blood boiled though as the scene before me began to unfold and I gulped down whatever was left of my beer.
Setting the empty can on the bar counter, I took one for the walk back over to where Maggie and Ashleigh still stood speaking to one another. Ashleigh held an expression that showed annoyance but I also knew she was blocking out every word. That was the VeVerka gift - they could block out anything you said yet make you feel like they hung on every last word. They promised they had never done it to me unless it was some X-rated topic they didn't care for.
As I approached them, I noticed Ashleigh's crystal blues shifting to me. The sun always made them lighter than they were. I wrapped an arm around Maggie's shoulder and just as I was about to speak, I was interrupted by the ringing of my phone. The three of us that stood in our closed off circle listened to the ringtone as I grabbed it from the pocket of my dry swim trunks only to smile at the sight of the caller ID.
Little Casie Baker.
Of course, I couldn't deny not wanting to talk to her. She was one of the many things that kept me motivated and waking up in the morning. As I always said before, she was my saving grace.
I excused myself and Ashleigh seemed to do the same, deciding to join Rookie and Baze in a game of volleyball with a few others they had just met. The vibes were well throughout the pool area. I headed straight for the inside of a quiet zone though, mostly just wanting to get away from the chattering and music so I could hear my princess' voice.
I answered it and it was immediate. The conversation flowed, she told me about her day and I spoke of mine - on a G-rated level, mind you. We talked about how we couldn't wait to reunite and all the things we'd plan to do together. It seemed the call was over all too fast though when I had someone from the corner of my eye walking up to stand beside me.
Hailey and her newest beau she had taken interest in.
"Nice to meet you, man." The male said and I took in his features. Nothing about him was boyish but then again he was no me. "I'm Nick." He introduced. He was holding out his hand and I was hesitant to shake it.
When I did though, I could see almost a glimmer of hope in Hailey's eyes.
"I'm Kells." I introduced myself as well. Maybe this guy wouldn't be as bad, but then again this was the same pussy that was afraid to even ask Hailey a simple question.
"Holy shit!" He exclaimed and soon broke out into this huge grin. I could see Hailey's face contort and honestly mine did as well. "I fucking knew it was you, man! M-G-fucking-K!" He was so excited I figured the vein in his forehead would burst.
I already knew what was going to happen. Hailey wasn't normally into guys that were obsessed with the band. She had flings from time to time but we all did at one point. She wanted the attention on her and not on the fact that she worked for an idol of theirs. She didn't want to speak on us more than she had to. This was definitely a possible fling and I couldn't help but smirk.
"That's me." I told him and he jumped around like a giddy child. Thankfully Hailey was looking to him less and less as someone she could get into bed with or even on a date later.
"Yo, I've been a fan for so fucking long, man. Your show with Limp in Vegas was fucking wild." He complimented and as the two of us divulged into conversation, Hailey rolled her eyes and trudged back over to the bar. She needed another margarita, I just knew it.
Truthfully I would like to say that I didn't do this on purpose, but I did. I fucking cherished the moment as well. I wanted to savor every bit and piece and the faces Hailey would make when she realized this guy was the biggest turn off in life. Some part of me wanted to be the only guy and that's all I could ask for. Another part of me wanted to be selfish and just ruin her chances of being with anyone.
