She cautiously glanced over the boulder that she was hiding behind. All bets were off if he saw her. She froze for a moment, remembering his threatening words to her. Those words could cause her to lose the most important thing in her life. She took a deep breath and after finding it all clear, quietly tip-toed her way to the door of the little wooden shack in the heart of Jordan Woods. She slowly opened the door until she was able to slip through but then silently got into position to defend herself if anyone came at her. Surprise crossed her face when no one came. None of the crooks were there. A little window on the south side of the shack, opposite the door, let in the only light possible; which wasn’t much, but she was still able to see. In the left corner, next to the window, she found her older brother tied to a chair with thick coarse rope and handcuffs. As soon as her eyes landed on him, she ran right to him. It had been four weeks since she last saw him. She knelt at his feet and looked at his face. The little light that came through the window lite his face up quite well and when she saw his face, she gasped in despair. His usually tan face was now covered in dry blood and bruises the size of Texas. His eye was swollen shut and turning an icky blue and purple. It also looked like someone cut a small piece of his upper left lip. She wished she could cry for the pain he must feel but she knew that one sound could cause his death. She moved behind him to untie the ropes and cringed when he winced in pain.
