I wasn't like the others, I saw it coming.

My lungs took in the smell of the beach air freshener that dangled from the mirror in the car. There was the soft sound of chatter and laughter, that was slightly drowned by the music in my ear. The day was rainy and gray, my thoughts occupied with the pitter patter of the weather. Slowly the atmosphere turned red as the car came to a stop, making the left and right of the windshield wipers audible.

Everything appeared seemingly serene, but there rose an uneasy pang in my stomach. I rested my chin in my hand, my eyes meeting the flash of a car and my ears hearing the screeching of tires. There was a lot of water on the road...I really did know. Before I blinked it was over.

The man who strained to keep control of his car was now slack, and my parents who talked of faraway trips to grandmas were now silent. Where did that leave me? I was given a choice, and I so selfishly grasped at the strings of life that dangled within my reach.

I didn't want to leave the world I had barely gotten to know, so the figure who stood before me, no angel I had seen before gave me a choice.

"There was something special inside of you." It's eerie voice rasped.

"It's gone. I'm dead now." I looked at my hands that slowly seemed to fade away.

I looked all around but there was no bright light, no family member motioning for me just this figure who looked like a demon asking for a price.

"I could give it all to you."

"What is my all considered?"

Laughing slowly as he beckoned to me he replied, "Your life."

Chills rose up my skin, preventing me from speaking. Thinking was hard at this point, but I knew what I wanted.

"And your price?" I asked slowly, my essence becoming more numb by the second.

"I need something retrieved, in the distant future..." his smile grew wide. This man, this thing was no angel.

"What is it?" I asked, feeling as if I would disappear.

"My gift to you is immortality, my price...a little errand." His hollowed eyes peered at me menacingly.

"I'll take it!" I shouted. Instantly the feeling of numbness, of fading away was gone, and I could see him through unshrowded eyes.

This strange man was Death, and I had just made a deal with him.
