It's a common teen cliché.
Movies, books and songs monopolize it,
Making it seem like fiction, but its nature is so common;
Falling in love with your best friend.
It started in kindergarten.
He was six, I was five
And we shared a mat at naptime.
He would hold my hand as we slept.
This was when I realized that
I liked my best friend.
In middle school it was harder.
Girls would flock to him after puberty had changed us.
He would smile, they would laugh, my heart would tighten.
In my head the line kept repeating;
I had a crush on my best friend.
High school flew by in a blur.
My best friend found a girl he liked.
It wasn't me.
They dated all four years and they were happy,
But I was not,
Because I had feelings for my best friend.
Now I'm at the epitome of despair,
Sitting in a hard, wooden pew,
Wearing a dress I'll never wear again.
My eyes well with tears,
My heart fills with regret.
I look up at the happy couple kissing; just married.
A single tear slides down my cheek as I come to a heartbreaking realization;
I am in love with my best friend.
