Stardust

A black sky full of diamonds.

Each one a different size,

A different shape.

They call out to me

Pulling me closer.

Weightless,

Swimming through the sky.

Higher and higher,

Comets and planets wave to me in passing.

But they mean nothing.

I want to touch the stars.

They are so close,

Taunting me with their silver glow.

I try to swim faster,

The velvet pool slows me down.

A star is finally within my grasp.

I stretch out my fingertips,

The stardust is cold against my skin.

Closer,

And closer.

My hand wraps around my prize.

Smooth like glass,

So cold it burns,

So bright it's blinding.

It beats like a heart,

The life of the sky in my hands.

It whispers to me,

In a language forgotten,

The secrets of the universe

For it's time is growing short.

My soul is heavy as the star

Slips out of my hands.

It falls to Earth

In a blaze of glory.

Stardust streaking across the sky.
