For my PopPop
Army Tags
He left when it was dark,
at the time when
seconds and minutes
seem to stop.
He went in his own way,
on his own terms.
No painful goodbye
from a hospital bed.
Here one minute,
Gone the next.
Like a lightbulb
suddenly blowing
out.
Nothing remaining except
the silver army tags
that always hung
around his neck.
So long soldier
the war is done
and night has fallen,
time for you to rest.
