The next few days was just average. Well maybe except for the next day of Jayden's press statement release. That morning Sasha rushed to Diana's desk where we were going through the employees' list around eleven.
"Diana... There is a commotion downstairs... It's that girl.." She panted out the words. "Oh no!" Exclaimed Diana. "These girls will never let me live in peace. Let's see what she wants now." She said and we went to the ground floor towards the receptionist desk. There was a beautiful blonde with typical blue eyes shouting at the receptionist.
One look at her and you will immediately realise who she is. She was Stephanie, the one who had spread her pregnancy rumors. She looked just like Jayden's choice of women. Ever since I knew him, they all had blond hair and blue eyes. That was one of the reasons why I refused to give into my crush for him.
I wondered why she would willingly announce that she was pregnant to the world, that too by a womaniser. Everyone was going to judge her and not Jayden. I guess she had just been hoping to trap Jayden into marriage or maybe to get his money.
"Has Mr Cole been informed of this 'situation' already?" Diana asked while she glared at Stephanie. "Miss Summers has been informed ma'am. She said Mr Cole will be down soon." Someone answered and Stephanie smiled triumphantly.
"Oh please! Why do you look so smug? We all know Jayden is going to throw you out when he arrives." Diana said while she threw a nasty look at Stephanie. "Wanna bet on that, bitch?" Stephanie said angrily.
"Out!" A voice boomed behind us. I didn't need to look behind to recognise it. "Are you deaf? I said get out Stephanie!" Jayden shouted. It was not often that Jayden Cole could be seen getting angry and trust me when I say that it wasn't a pretty sight. Stephanie looked scared but then she suddenly smiled and approached Jayden.
"Baby I know you're angry at me for spreading those rumors. But it was only because you were not answering my calls. I missed you so much." She changed tact and encircled his neck with her arms. "Don't worry I know you are pretending to be angry as you have a reputation of being ruthless in front of your employees." She went on. Jayden was seething with anger at this point. He removed her arms as if it burnt her and shouted again.
"Security! Get this woman out of here. Don't think you can call someone I care about bitch and you will get away with it. Melanie, call Xavier and ask him to get me a restraining order against her." And he went back into his office while the security dragged Stephanie out. Needless to say, it had been a delightful sight to watch.
That was the last time that I saw Jayden. And today was Diana's last day at the office. I will have to assume her duties as from Monday morning. I was nervous, to say the least. But I was also sad that I was losing a mother figure in my life. "What's wrong, dear?" Diana's voice brought me out of my reverie. "It's nothing."
"Oh rubbish! Tell me what happened? I understand you enough to know that something is wrong. Did Jayden say something to you?"
"No Diana, it's not him. I am just sad because you will be leaving soon. I don't take goodbyes well."
"Who said I was leaving? I will always be here for you dear. And don't you dare forget me. I will be expecting phone calls and visits. Evelyn, I found a daughter in you. If I had a daughter, I would have wanted her to be just like you. I want you to meet John tomorrow. I'm sure he would agree with me on this." Hearing her words brought tears to my eyes.
"Now look at what you did." I looked at her, dumbfounded. "You made me so emotional. How am I going to work properly? I am also going to keep thinking about that husband of mine." And just like that, she made me laugh. Her words and that dreamy look in her eyes always made me hope that one day I could also find love.
She has been in love with her husband John for thirty years now and tomorrow was also their twenty-eighth wedding anniversary. Which is why tomorrow's party was a double celebration. I have never met her husband before but I have heard so much about him from Diana. She talks about him everyday and from what I've gathered, he is a good man. Diana is truly lucky.
I called her as soon as turned to leave and hugged her. "I love you Diana. I'm scared." "There you go, making me emotional again," she said scoldingly.
"Silly girl! What are you scared of?" "I'm scared of failing. I'm scared of not being able the challenge that this job is. I'm scared of not being able to take your place. I don't want to replace you. Everyone has so many expectations from me. I'm scared of not being up to them."
"Oh dear! There is nothing to be scared of. You are already efficient. I have seen your potentials in these two weeks. And I promise to come and visit the office frequently. You will be excellent at your job. You have so many people to help you. You are a brave person Evelyn. Don't be scared of such a small thing. Now go. We have so much work to do."
"Evelyn dear! Can you please deliver this to Jayden or Melanie? Sasha is still not back." Diana asked when we got back from lunch. I didn't have anything important to do. So, I agreed. Melanie wasn't at her desk so I decided to go to Jayden's office. I heard angry voices from inside and was immediately curious.
"... You have to leave tomorrow morning Jay. Your father has asked for you to be there tomorrow. It must be important." A woman's voice said.
"Not more important that the function Melanie. I have to be present, for Diana and for John. I cannot miss it for anything." The other voice, that undoubtedly belonged to Jayden answered.
"What if it's your Nonno?" Melanie asked. There was utter silence after that. I couldn't take it anymore and decided to enter the cabin. I knocked and Jayden replied for me to enter. I gave him the file and was about to leave when he asked me what I never expected him to.
"Butterfly, will you be my date tomorrow night?" Asked Jayden in a husky voice that usual make woman swoon at just the sound of it. I gasped, for not even in my wildest dream have I ever imagined Jayden asking me out. I almost started squealing mentally before I look into his blue eyes. Jayden's eyes have always been easy to read. And what I saw in them instantly made me feel disappointed. He was not serious at all. His eyes held amusement and to some extent, frustration. I was saddened by that but was certainly not about to make a fool out of myself. "No,"I simply replied.
"What?" He said. "You heard me." I replied in turn. Melanie started laughing and I joined her while Jayden was trying to look angry but failed miserably. "What's so funny here?" He asked pouting and looking like a child. "Get back to work both of you." He said when we didn't stop laughing.
"Cut us some slack. We don't get to see 'The Jayden Cole' turned down by a girl everyday." Melanie said when our laughter finally calmed down. "Yeah yeah keep on laughing. It was so funny. Ha. Ha." He said sarcastically. "Please Mel. Find me a date. I'm desperate right now. Why don't you be my date Mel?"
"Sorry but I already have a plus one. And I've never seen you this desperate before." Melanie answered while trying to fight off her smile. "It's because I've never run out of girls before." Jayden replied angrily. "I think you're getting old."
"Yes. That's the only reasonable explanation." I agreed with Melanie and we both started laughing again.
"Shut up both of you. I'm going to hit the bar tonight and I'll bring someone super sexy tomorrow to rub it off your noses. Now go ahead to do some work. I have an empire to run." He said looking like a lost child.
"Yes your Majesty!" We said in unison and left the cabin still laughing. As soon as the laughter died, Melanie turned to me with a serious expression. "You're good for him Evelyn. Jayden has never been so playful and in such a mood before, well except for when he is with Diana. But then again, he had known Diana since childhood. You're different. I'm glad that you came." She said with a soft smile. I could see how much she liked him.
"You like him, don't you?" I couldn't help but ask. "Yes, I do. But he will never see me as anything more than a friend and a PA." I felt bad for her but I hoped that someday she would meet someone who would appreciate her.
