Diana's howl of laughter could heard all around the floor. I had finally told her all about my first year at uni and this crazy woman found it hilarious. Note the sarcasm please. There was nothing funny about it. It was rather irritating. He had annoy the hell out of me. But I guess only I will be able to understand what I went through. 'Oh don't lie,' my inner self said scoldingly. 'You enjoyed his attention more than anything.' I decided to ignore her as I was certainly not in the mood to fight with her over such a petty issue. And yeah, I could be mature when I wanted to.
I was surprised, to say the least that Jayden and my story was making Diana laugh. I honestly thought that Diana would be mad at Jayden for making fun of me and annoying me. After telling me how much she disliked Jayden's way of treating women, I couldn't understand why she was not angry. I decided to ask her about it after she got over her laughing fit.
"Diana, what's so funny?" I didn't mean to sound whiny but I sounded exactly like a children who got refused a lollipop. "I mean you said that you hated the way Jayden treated women. So why are you not even angry?"
"Oh Evelyn dear! I hate the way Jayden uses women like trash. But never have I imagine Jayden to behave like this with a girl. That is also with someone who is just the opposite of him. He never pays attention to any women. But it looks like Jayden just keeps doing his best to bring your attention to him. I would say that the boy craves your attention." She concluded with a small chuckle.
I felt hurt when she talked about Jayden treating women like trash. Because I know that if I gave him my attention then he might treat me like that too. But I was a coward. I was afraid of losing his attention. I was afraid of stop being his favourite nerdy, his butterfly. That nickname has always made me feel giddy for some unknown reason. And up till now I never really asked him the reason behind this name.
"Evelyn!!" I heard Diana call my name. "Yes?" "Are you alright dear? I called your name a few times right now. Daydreaming about the boss, are we?" She asked teasingly and I felt so embarrassed that I couldn't answer her. "How about I make that dream of yours come true?" I didn't understand her words and asked her what she meant. "Oh Lord! What do I do with this silly girl?" She exclaimed dramatically. I swear this women should have been an actress.
"This needs to be delivered to Jay and I was hoping that you could do it for me." She said sweetly while showing me a blue file and I could feel her scheming something in her mind. "Diana I'm sorry but I don't want to go." She started pouting as soon as I refused. She behaves like a five year old sometimes. I wonder how her husband puts up with her. "Why don't you ask Sasha to deliver it?" Her face immediately morphed into disgust.
"Seriously? That girl will only try to seduce him or give him a blowjob and Jay will never refuse her in this matter. Ew! I feel disgusted just by saying that. Or even worst, there might be a cat-fight between her and that Melanie girl. They usually get pretty nasty during their fights."
"But why do they hate each other?" I had to ask this question. "What do you think dear? Of course because of Jayden. They both like him and the latter will not choose between them. Now will you please deliver the file for me?" "Okay. I'll do it just this once." And with that I strolled towards the elevator.
I was surprised to see James, the guy from the fight on my first day. He smiled at me as soon as I entered the elevator. I honestly thought the elevator would be empty at this time. I smiled back at him and wondered whether I should talk to him or not. But just then he asked me, "you're the one replacing Diana, right?"
"Yeah that's me. Evelyn Stewart."
"I'm James." He took my hand in his for a light shake.
"Dean?" I couldn't help but asked.
"Nah, but I'll agree that I've got the looks," he said with a wink.
I laughed at his cockiness and then decided to ask him about his fight in the break room. "It was you fighting in the break room on my first day?"
He all but blushed at my words. "Actually it's not what it looks like. I am not usually a violent person. Dan is in fact my best friend."
"Oh, but what did he mean by touching his best friend's sister?" I blurted before I even realised it. I quickly apologised. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have asked that. I really didn't mean to pry. You don't have to answer that."
He laughed and I mean a full-on throwing his head back laugh. "It's alright, Evelyn. Actually Dan has been dating my little sister secretly for a while. And I was enraged when I found out. You could say that my protectiveness got the best out of me. I just didn't want my sister to get hurt."
I smiled fondly as some memories started to come back. "I understand. Brothers tend to be protective like that."
James smiled back before continuing, "Yes. But I trust Dan. He is really into my sister. And they are both grown-ups who can take their own decisions."
We heard the ping of the elevator and smiled when we realised that James had to get off just one floor before mine. While leaving, he looked over his shoulder and said, "Oh, and the name is Andrews."
I had already made up my mind to give Melanie the file. The elevator doors opened to a corridor and I went straight through it. The corridor ended to a large and well organised desk behind which was Melanie. I approached her nervously. I mean she did look pretty much intimidating.
"Hi," I said with a soft smile while she looked at me with a poker face. "I'm from the HR department. Diana asked me to deliver this file to Mr. Cole. " "Oh yes. Thank you. I was waiting for this," she said sweetly. I started asking my whether I had been too quick to judge her on the way back to Diana's office.
"Evelyn! You're back already? Let's take our lunch together. I'm famished after all these stress from this morning." Diana said as soon as I reached her. I agreed with her as I was also hungry. We decided to go to a nearby café that was recently opened. We had also decided to take the private elevator that is only accessible to the bosses since the common elevator would take time.
But when the elevator door opened, the devil was already inside. I had started to regret my decision of working here. "Hello again ladies. Ana darling, I'm going to give my press statement before attending a lunch meeting. Where are you guys heading to?" He asked and I wondered how did that concern him in any way. But nevertheless Diana told him about our plans and he offered to drop us. I was about to refuse but Diana beat me to it and accepted his offer.
And just like that he suddenly realised my presence in the elevator. "Hey butterfly, you are awfully quiet today. You know that I'm not used to your silence." "Well, you are just not worth my voice or patience," I replied impatiently.
"I missed your sass, Butterfly."
"Can't say the same about you though."
"Just admit it already. You did miss me in those four years."
"That's where you are wrong. I never once thought about you."
"Are you trying to lie to me or to yourself, Butterfly? Because you know that I can see right through you."
"Oh, you are so full of yourself!" I exclaimed, walking out of the elevator while stomping my feet.
The car ride was pretty much uneventful. Diana and Jayden kept the conversation going while I stared in awe at the beautiful buildings we passed by. The café was just two lane down. It looked quite modern on the outside.
Jayden sped off to where ever he was going after dropping us. The interior of the café was warm and cozy, perfect to help you relax and the food was also great. Diana and I talked about office works while eating. I had already decided to come here more often. The rest of the day passed by without even realising it and soon afterwards I found myself falling asleep in my bed, dreaming about a certain grey-eyed person as always.
