Next day was much the same as before, the usual lessons filling the time between breaks frustratingly slowly. Although, Sadie wasn't sure whether she was looking forward to lunch after yesterday, she was nervous about being caught in the middle of 2 feuding groups, and she had no idea which she could trust, if any.

They had Math period 3, the results from the surprise test were handed out and Sadie was pleased to see 88% scribed at the top of hers. She felt something hit the back of her head and turned to find Millie smiling at her, she nodded her head at Sadie's paper seemingly wanting to see her mark. Sadie held it up slowly, and was surprised to see Millie smile and give her a thumbs-up. Sadie nodded her head at Millie's paper in return, she held it up and Sadie saw a big 97% on top and Millie winking and looking pleased with herself. Wow...you are a mystery Millie Brown.

At lunch, she decided the safest option was to find an empty table and put herself in isolation, hoping that they'd move on to some other kid and she could get on with making some real friends, friends without the drama. She found a table near the back of the cafeteria and plonked herself in the middle. A couple of minutes later she groaned internally as she was joined by Maddie, Grace, and Marina. Ok, as long as this is it, I'm ok.

"Hey Sadie, how's it going?" Didn't see you at break today" said Maddie, a little too perkily.

"Yeah, um, I had to go the student office, fill out some paperwork" she lied. She didn't know why she lied, but her instincts told her to be wary of these girls, and her instincts had been honed well over the past couple of years.

"Aw shame, you missed a huge fight in the parking lot. Mad Millie was beating on some poor kid, lucky she didn't get caught" said Maddie, smirking at the name she'd given Millie, the other girls giggling.

"R...really? What was the fight about?" asked Sadie, surprised to hear that Millie would be the one fighting, she was surrounded by 4 boys all day every day for goodness sake.

"Who cares, she'd just better hope that someone doesn't tell the principal" she said, sounding devious.

Just at that moment the girl in question chose to arrive and sit down on the same table, opposite Sadie. "Doesn't tell the principal what?" she asked, with mock innocence. "Hey Sadie" she said, when no one answered.

Sadie noticed Millie's hand looked bruised, as did her arm and neck. She also noticed a large scar that ran almost the length of her forearm. Millie caught her looking and moved her hand, apparently self-conscious. What surprised Sadie though was that instead of trying to cover the most obvious bruises, Millie tried to cover the scar on her arm, pulling her sleeves down. "What happened?" asked Sadie, indicating the bruises.

"Let's just say a difference of opinion...but it's resolved now" she said coolly.

"Hah!" spat Maddie, "just another poor kid who has to go home and explain to his parents what happened more like" she said.

"That kid got exactly what he had coming to him" said Millie, as if that was explanation enough.

"You'd better watch out, Millie, one day you might get what's coming to you" Grace sneered.

Millie turned her icy stare to Grace, making her suddenly look a lot less sure of herself, "who says I already haven't?" said Millie quietly.

The 3 girls looked at each other nervously, trying to understand exactly what she meant by that. Whatever she meant, it gave everyone an uneasy feeling, and they were glad to be interrupted by the bell signalling the start of class. Maddie, Grace, and Marina stood ready to leave, "you coming, Sadie? You don't want to be associated with her, trust me" said Maddie.

"Yeah, Sadie, be good and run along" said Millie, finishing her food.

This made Sadie really angry, "what the fuck is your problem, Millie?" Maddie and her friends would have given anything to stay and watch this but they knew they'd get detention if they were late again, so they walked away laughing at the scene.

"Come find us later, Sadie!" called Maddie as they reached the doors.

"Pardon, I didn't quite catch that?" said Millie calmly.

"I said what is your fucking problem? Why can't you just leave me alone? All I want is a quiet life, make some friends, and stay away from people like you" shit, I shouldn't have said that.

"Hmmm, what do you mean 'people like me'?" asked Millie, doing the annoying quote signs with her fingers.

"It doesn't matter" said Sadie, running her hands through her hair, not wanting to explain what she'd said in the heat of the moment.

"No, go on, it's not really fair to shout at me like that and not explain, don't you think?" Millie said calmly.

"I...I just want to get on with my life and not be bothered by people who are...you know...the bad kids."

At this Millie started laughing. Wow, she looks amazing when she laughs...shit, stop it, Sadie. "You think we're the bad guys?!" She stood up and started walking away from a very confused Sadie, turning she said "you'd better hurry, Mr Jackson loves to give out detentions, being new probably won't save you."
