Sadie walked as fast as she could to the park. It was a full moon that night so she could see pretty far from the light it provided. As she approached she could see a figure sitting on one of the swings, leaning to one side, head resting against the chain, rocking the swing back and forth with their feet on the ground. She knew it was Millie, she'd recognise her anywhere, which made her nervous given how long, or rather how little time, they'd known each other.
"Hey Millie" she said softly, sitting on the swing next to her. She didn't answer straight away, instead she just lowered her head and gazed at the ground. Sadie didn't push it, instead sitting next to Millie in silence, swinging gently in time with her.
"Was that your secret?" Millie eventually said, quietly.
"What?"
"Tonight, was that your secret, that you kissed a girl?"
"Kind of" she sighed. She knew that she'd gone after Millie to make sure that she was ok, and if confessing her secret helped her be ok, then she was willing to do so. "Actually, I told my closest friend something I'd been keeping to myself for a long time, that I'd never been able to tell anyone." She saw Millie look up at her in interest. "I didn't want to lie about it or hide it anymore, and we were really close, I thought if anyone wouldn't judge me, it'd be her...I told her that I liked girls...that I was gay." She felt her heart thumping in her chest, her confession bringing up all the bad memories from her life before.
Millie kept looking at her, her expression unreadable. Under such scrutiny, Sadie felt the need to carry on talking. "Next day I went to school, that bitch had apparently told those fucking evil kids all about it, it couldn't have been anyone else. They made my life hell. She knew it, and she never even apologised. My family were targeted eventually...I felt so fucking guilty, I did something stupid...I tried to hurt myself..."
Sadie hadn't noticed Millie stand up, so was slightly surprised when she was pulled up into a tight hug. "I'm sorry" she said, "I'm sorry that bad things happen to good people, you didn't deserve that, all for choosing to trust someone you thought would support you no matter what...I know how you feel...trust me."
After a few minutes, Sadie pulled away slightly from Millie to check she was ok, after all she'd followed her to the park to make sure everything was fine after the incident earlier. She saw a tear falling down Millie's face, her perfect face, so she raised her hand and gently wiped it away with her thumb. In that moment, where Millie's hands were still resting gently on Sadie's waist, and Sadie's hand was caressing Millie's face, the world seemed to pause, waiting for their next move. They slowly leaned closer, closing their eyes, till their lips met. It wasn't a true kiss, instead their lips ghosted over each other, sending chills down their bodies. Sadie pulled away slightly, she could feel Millie's whole body trembling against hers.
"Millie?" she asked worriedly.
"I'm sorry" Millie said, voice cracking, "I have to go." She dropped her hands from Sadie's waist and started backing away from her.
Sadie just stood there, not understanding what was happening. She stepped forwards and grabbed Millie's hand, "no, you can't just walk away, I...don't want you to go."
Millie pulled her hand away, a haunted look on her face, "please...let me go" she whispered, "I can't do this, I thought I could, but I can't." She turned and half walked, half ran away. Sadie stood there, stunned. All of a sudden someone ran past her quickly, trying to catch Millie.
"Sadie!" She turned to find Noah, Gaten, and Caleb approaching, looking back she saw Finn catch Millie and grab her into a tight embrace. She watched as Millie just stood there, Finn towering over her, resting his head on hers. Watched as she slowly raised her arms to grab at Finn's jacket. Watched as she slowly sank to the ground, to her knees, in tears, Finn going with her, continuing to hold her, to comfort her.
