At that precise moment, the door opened to reveal Sadie's mom, who was confronted with the sight of her daughter making out with another girl, one whom was a complete stranger. Her mouth dropped open, she had no clue what to say to the sight. At the same time, Millie and Sadie quickly pulled apart, stepping away from each other in response to her mom's inopportune arrival. Millie looked down at the floor, running her hand through her hair, unable to meet Sadie's mom's eye, whereas Sadie managed an awkward "hey mom..."
"Hey" she replied, regaining her composure somewhat. "Good party?" she asked pointedly, leaving any explanation open for Sadie to fill in.
"It had its ups and downs" Sadie replied, giving nothing away. It was like the most awkward game of chess, played with questions and vague answers, neither side willing to yield or use specifics.
"I see, well, why don't you come in? Seems a weird place to have a chat with your mom, right?"
Sadie cursed, knowing her mom had just taken a step towards victory, a 'chat' had been deployed, a great weapon in the parental arsenal.
"Wait for me in the kitchen, I just have to pop upstairs for a minute" her mom said, going back in.
Sadie took Millie's hand and gently lead her towards the kitchen. "If you want me to, I can go" said Millie, on the one hand, hoping she would say 'yes', worried that her presence was going to make things worse, but on the other hand hoping that Sadie wouldn't ask her to as she desperately wanted to spend more time with her.
"No, no, it's fine" Sadie reassured her, "mom loves to have 'chats' when anything happens. I think it's her way of coping with things, since, you know?"
"I understand," said Millie, smiling, "I've had a lot of that myself...but it's only 'cause they give a shit, right?" she added, shrugging.
"Yeah, I know, but..." Sadie trailed off.
"But what?"
"I was kind of hoping to keep you to myself for a little bit, like my own little secret" she explained, looking embarrassed.
This just caused Millie to break into a massive grin, damn, she's so fucking cute she thought, looking at Sadie's flushed face. Unable to keep her distance, she leaned in to kiss her gently and quickly, conscious the Sadie's mom could walk in any second.
Her mom did walk in a few seconds later, she took a few seconds to survey the scene, seeing her daughter and the strange girl looking at each other adoringly, although they both looked away when she arrived.
"Lori" she stated, holding her hand out to Millie, who slowly raised her head to meet Lori's eye.
Extending her hand to Lori's and trying to steel her nerves with a deep breath, "Millie" she answered.
"So..." she said.
"So?" Sadie replied, challenging her mom.
"Tell me about yourself, Millie." Sadie shot her mom an angry look, dammit mom!
"Oh, um, I go to school with Sadie, I live in the next road with my mum and Ava, my, uh, sister, and...well, there's not really much to say...sorry" she trailed off, not expecting to be placed under such scrutiny.
"Your accent...British?" Millie nodded in answer, too nervous to speak any more, thinking that she'd already made an idiot of herself in front of Sadie, the only person that mattered right now.
Lori opened her mouth to ask another question, wanting to know far more about this girl who had clearly captured her daughters heart, obvious from the look on Sadie's face whenever she looked at her. Sadie cut her off, wanting to save Millie from any more awkwardness, "so, mom, we're just headed upstairs, homework" she stated, standing up. She grabbed Millie's hand and, practically pulling her up, started to walk away, not giving her mom an opportunity to stop them. Millie couldn't help but give an awkward smile to Lori on the way out, which she surprisingly returned with a slight smirk.
When they reached Sadie's room, she sat down on the bed and exaggeratedly put her head in her hands and groaned loudly, "ugh, sorry about my mom, I never thought she'd do that!"
Millie laughed, "it's ok, I mean, she did open the door to you making out with me, she probably wasn't expecting it."
"Yeah, I guess...wait, me making out with you!?" she said incredulously.
Millie just shrugged nonchalantly, "yeah, I distinctly remember you started that...hey!" she half-yelled as Sadie threw a pillow at her, "right, that's it Sink, you're gonna pay!" With that she grabbed the pillow and hit Sadie, who grabbed another and started fighting back. After a few minutes, they were laughing too hard to continue and just laid back on the bed next to each other, looking each other in the eye. As they calmed down, they couldn't help but lean in to a gentle kiss, it only lasted a few seconds and they broke away smiling.
Suddenly looking seriously, Sadie couldn't help but say "I meant what I said earlier, Millie. I know I didn't say it properly, but I meant it...I...I think I love you."
Millie sat up straight way and looked down at her hands which were now nervously fiddling with each other. "It's ok" Sadie said, sitting up to join her, "I understand, you don't need to say it back, I wasn't really expecting you to...but I just wanted to say it, ok?"
Millie turned to look at her, Sadie saw a mixture of fear and something she couldn't place on her face, "thank you" she managed to say, before pulling Sadie into a tight hug, eventually breaking away to plant the most heartfelt kiss on Sadie's lips that she'd ever known. Millie may not have been able to say the words, but Sadie knew how she felt.
