I follow Coach Allen outside. She keeps walking until we reach the path that leads to the park. Then stops.
"Will your parents mind if you get home a little later?" she asks. I shake my head. She continues down the path, and I follow.
"So, what's on your mind?" she asks. "How'd you know something was on my mind?" I ask.
"You never play badly unless something's up," she says.
"Is it Sara?" she asks.
"No."
"Don't lie, Jensen."
I sigh. "It's a lot of stuff."
"Come on. Tell me."
"Well, I miss Nick."
"That's not all."
"Sara just won't stop. She's always fighting me and yelling things at me."
She thinks for a moment. "Think of the volleyball as Sara's head," she says
I laugh. "I'll remember that."
"Don't let her get to you. She just wants you to break. Just ignore her," Coach Allen tells me. I nod. "I know."
"Now, the real problem is how awful your serve was," she laughs. "Hey!" I laugh, pushing her playfully.
"Come on, let's get back to the school before Sara makes a move on one of the guys," she says. I nod.
I pull out my phone to text my mom and tell her I'll be a little late. I'm not paying attention when I run into someone. "Oh God, I'm so sorry!" I hear. It's a boys voice, and its very familiar.
I look up.
"Nick?"
