In times like this, the courage of Men wavers, the fearlessness in the hearts of the Dwarves falters and the dauntless spirit of the Elves quivers.
I was there in Dol Guldûr when Sauron "The Necromancer" was destroyed. I saw how such terrible darkness can cause the immense fortitude of Wizards to stammer. Not with fear of their own demise, but the fear of the demise of others if they failed.
With the last of my dwindling energy, I managed to watch through the haze of injury that clouded my vision and the icy stone bit into my body. Gandalf and Sauron going head to head. Maiar to Maiar. And at last, with all of the power he could muster, Gandalf smote him upon the hillside.
His ghostly body dissolved into the night like a whisper of dust in the bitter air and Gandalf collapsed. Watching Gandalf collapse was more painful than being stabbed straight in the heart. It couldn't happen, not to him. He was the only one of my friends still alive and I was about to lose him.
Casting my pain aside, I slid myself to a withered pillar and used it to steady myself as I stood up. Slowly, my bones cracked and my wounds stretched sending a stream of agony through my body.
I took thirteen wobbling steps toward Gandalf before collapsing at his side. His face and beard were stained with drying blood and a pained expression creased his face, but the peaceful sleepiness of exhaustion rested on his face.
I lowered my head onto his chest, causing my dirtied snowy hair to sprawl across his body. A single heavy tear dripped from my eye and soaked into his dirty grey robe.
'Mithrandir,' I mumbled. 'Nîn mellon.' I gripped his arm tighly, making sure he couldn't be taken from me.
Slowly and weakly, I felt a hand on my back. I lifted my head and through the strands of white hair I saw Elrond, Saruman and Galadriel standing stiffly behind me. Elrond and Saruman remained stone faced while a small gleeful smile crept up Galadriel's lips.
I turned back to see Gandalf's friendly blue eyes and a weak smile on his lips. I felt a rush of relief the pain disappeared for a while.
'Thank you...' He mumbled weakly.
