Chapter 12:

Finn's POV

My eyes opened, and the first thing I saw was Millie, who was laying just inches away from my face. I smiled and kissed her forehead, causing her to stir. She slowly opened her eyes with a smile across her lips.

"Why hello, Finn Wolfhard," she mumbled.

"Sleep well?" I rubbed my thumb against her jawline.

"Mhm," she smiled, sleepiness still in her face.

I slowly got out of the hospital bed to check what time it was. 4:30 p.m. I looked back over at Millie, who had once again shut her eyes. I figured she probably hadn't been sleeping much these past few days, so I tried my best to stay as quiet as possible. I stood still for a moment, wondering where our parents were since we had been asleep for the past few hours. I opened the heavy door, revealing a cold, plain hallway. My mom was sitting in a chair, scrolling through her phone.  She quickly looked up when she heard the door open and smiled.

"Hey, honey, come take a seat," she patted the cushioned seat next to her.

"Hey, mom," I sat down, "have you been here the whole time?"

"No, when we saw you guys were asleep we didn't wanna bother you so we snuck down to get some lunch."

I nodded, turning my head to look down the hallway.

"So where are her parents now?"

"Oh, the doctor wanted to talk about something with them," she paused, "how's Millie doing?"

"Oh, well, she actually seems to be doing okay. She's been smiling a lot."

"That's good, hun," she smiled, reaching her hand over and patting me on the leg.

Both of our heads immediately turned when we heard the sound of footsteps coming down the hallway. Mr. Brown walked with his head up and his arm on Mrs. Brown's shoulder, who walked with her head down and her thumb rested on her bottom lip.

"Oh, Finn, you're awake," Mr. Brown said.

Mrs. Brown looked up and put her hand down. I glanced at her, noticing she had tears welling up in her eyes.

"Hi Mr. and Mrs. Brown," I stood up, "I'm sorry, we didn't mean to fall asleep for so long it's just-"

"Don't worry about it, Finn," Mrs. Brown said, "she could really catch up on sleep."

We all stayed quiet for a moment, until Mrs. Brown spoke, breaking the silence.

"Hey Finn, do you think I could talk to you for a minute?" Mrs. Brown asked.

I looked over at my mom for her permission and she nodded. "Yeah, of course," my mom said, standing up.

"I'll take her to go get some coffee down the hall," Mr. Brown said. They walked away, leaving just me and Mrs. Brown outside of Millie's door.

"Thank you so much for everything you've been doing for Millie, Finn. You have no idea how much we all appreciate it," she slowly began rubbing her hands, "but, um, she hasn't been doing well these past couple of days. She hasn't been sleeping, and she's been crying, and.. and screaming, and.. she's just been having a really hard time. The doctors have been observing her for the past couple of days, and um... they made the decision to, um, send her back over to the Lakeview Institution..."

"But, she doesn't need to go back there," I defended, "there's nothing wrong with her, she's just go-"

"I know, Finn, I know. But they think there's an underlying issue as to why she's acting the way she is, and even though it's not what we want, we have to do what's best for her." She said quietly, tears forming once again in her eyes.

"Do you know how long she has to stay there?"

"It depends, I guess, on how she does. She's never acted out quite like this before, which is why they want to take her in."

I looked down, a lump starting to form in the back of my throat.

"But um, Finn, once she returns home," she paused, "she's not going to be attending Lakeview High anymore."

At that moment, my blood went cold. Everything inside of me froze, and I stared at Mrs. Brown's watery eyes.

"So w-what does that mean?"

She looked back down, rubbing her hands once more. "There's a school that um, they've recommended to us. A private school. It's about two hours away, so-"

I felt my heart drop to my stomach. I was too shocked to cry- in fact, I was too shocked to even move.

"S-So, you're... you're moving?" I stuttered.

She slowly nodded her head. "I'm so sorry Finn, but you can always come and visit at any time."

I looked down, trying to gather my thoughts. The door to Millie's room slowly began to open, and she popped her head out.

"Hey, um, mom? Is it okay if I talk to Finn?" Her mom nodded her head and moved out of the way. Millie opened the door so that I could come in, closing the door behind her. We both stood near the bed with our heads down.

"Millie," I said quietly.

"I heard, Finn," she looked up at me, tears already streaming down her face, "I heard everything. I woke up and noticed you were gone, so I walked up to the door and... I heard everything."

She grabbed my hands, and looked me straight in the eye. "Finn," she whispered, "it's okay, Finn."

"Mills, we've only had a couple of weeks together, I-I thought that we would have so much more time," I choked on my tears.

"But Finn, words can't even describe how much you've done for me these past couple of weeks. You've made me a better person, and you actually make me want to get out of bed every morning."

"But Mills-"

"You make me look forward to what the day has to offer," she paused, wiping the tears away from her face, "You're... you're the light in my everlasting darkness, Finn," her voice broke. "I can see a future with you. I never even thought about my future until I met you, because I didn't think I would have one."

I looked down at the ground, tears rushing down my face and soaking my cheeks. "But what about now, Mills? I'm not even gonna see you anymore," I cried. A couple of weeks ago, I never would have let anyone see me cry, but around her it was different- I didn't care if she saw me like this. I've been building everything up for the past few days, and I finally had a chance to let it all out.

She stared at me for a moment, then put her hands on my cheeks and kissed me. We held it for a few seconds, until she broke away, still just inches away from my face. Her soft hands remained on my cheeks as tears ran down both of our faces.

"This isn't the end of our story, Finn," she whispered.

-------------------

Later that night, all I could think about was Millie. Her big, light brown eyes that were always glistening. Her short, brown hair and the way the curls always laid gently on her face. The way her cheeks turned a dark pink every time I called her beautiful. The way everything around us froze every time she smiled. How just the sound of her laugh would instantly make you smile. I thought about the way she played with her fingers every time she was nervous, and the way she had always admired lights every time they surrounded her. A couple of weeks ago, I so badly wanted to know her story. But now we're here, and I have the pleasure of saying that I was a part of it. Millie Bobby Brown is the love of my life, and I knew this wasn't the end.
