Chapter 4:
Millie's POV
Sadie quickly opened the front door, where both boys stood. Caleb wore a long-sleeve, red button-up shirt, khakis, and brown dress shoes. Finn, standing next to Caleb with his hands in his pockets, wore a long-sleeved, plain black shirt, jeans, and black shoes.
"Wow, look at you," Caleb said in a flirty way.
"Right back at you," she smiled, slightly biting her lip.
I was staring down at the ground and slightly looked up, noticing Finn looking me up and down- but differently this time. It wasn't his usual stare, but instead, it was much softer.
"Shit, I forgot my purse. Can you come with me to get it, Caleb?" Sadie asked.
Caleb came in the door and they began to run upstairs to retrieve her purse.
This being the first time I was left alone with Finn, I continued to look down, both my heart and my mind racing. Why was I always so nervous around him?
"Um," Finn broke the silence, "you look really good, Millie." I glanced up at him.
"Oh, thank you," I blushed, shaking my head, "same to you." We stared at each other for brief moment when we were interrupted by Sadie and Caleb running down the stairs.
"Ready guys?" Caleb asked.
We all nodded, leaving the house. We loaded ourselves into Caleb's car, him and Sadie in the front, and me and Finn in the back. Caleb started the car and turned the radio almost all the way up, music filling the car. We were on our way to the boardwalk, and being in the car, I seemed to have relaxed. Beautiful music flowed throughout the car, and everyone was already laughing and having a good time. Tonight was going to be a good night, I told myself.
In under 10 minutes, we had arrived to the restaurant.
"Bailey's Diner," nodded Finn, "good choice."
We all walked inside of the retro diner and found our way to a booth. We all sat down, and I continued to look around the familiar place. Bailey's Diner has been around for as long as I could remember, and it was a popular hang out spot for a lot of people. It was quite a small diner, but the colorful string lights and the old, loud music made up for it.
I looked back over at Finn, who was sitting across from me, and noticed him staring at me, smiling. His eyes immediately fell back down to the menu, a faint smile still spread across his lips.
After about an hour of eating and chatting amongst ourselves, we decided to leave Bailey's.
"Hey, so I think Caleb and I are gonna take a walk, is that alright?" Sadie asked as we left the diner.
"Yeah, you guys go have fun," Finn teased, "but not too much fun- you're our ride home."
"Yeah, yeah," Caleb laughed.
Caleb grabbed Sadie's hand and they began to walk away, laughing with each other. I smiled at how happy Sadie looked- she deserved it after all she's done for me.
"So... do you wanna go take a walk? On the boardwalk?" Finn glanced over at me.
"Sure, that'd be nice," I smiled, the butterflies coming back into my stomach. We walked along the lake- the cool, fresh breeze wrapping around me.
"So," Finn said, kicking a small rock as we walked, "you never got a chance to tell me about yourself."
"There's not much to know about me, I guess. I'm not a very interesting person," I responded shyly.
"That's not true," he looked up, "I know just by looking at you that there's a lot to you, but you're just not telling me." A faint smile had spread across his lips.
Finn's POV
I watched her as we walked along the boardwalk. She wore a baggy white sweater, along with a black mini skirt. I watched her short hair blow around in the wind, and the way she deeply inhaled the lake breeze every time there was a gust of wind. I watched her look at the ground as we walked, knowing she was self-conscious about every move she made. She was fucking gorgeous. I knew she had a story, everyone did. But it was hers that I was interested in.
"Well, what do you wanna know?" She asked.
"What do you like to do?" I responded.
"I don't know, um, I like to read, and I like to draw."
"What do you like to read?"
"Anything, really. I could read for hours and hours and never get bored of it," her eyes lit up, "it's amazing how words on a paper can take you to a whole new place, and make you feel like a whole new person, y'know?"
I stared at her for a few seconds, thinking about what she had just said. In the corner of my eye, I noticed colorful, flashing lights. I glanced up, and a giant, glowing Ferris Wheel stood in front of us.
"Wanna give it a try?" I asked.
"I'm not really big on heights..." she hesitated.
"You'll be okay, I promise," I reassured her. As she looked at me with a worried expression, I held out my hand, gesturing for her to grab it. We ran over to the booth, got two tickets, and got on to the first available cart. We started slowly going up and she nervously looked around. After a short period of time, we finally reached the top. When a gust of wind came, causing the cart to rock a bit, she quickly grabbed my arm.
"It's okay, it's okay," I held her arm tightly. After the cart stopped rocking, she got slightly less tense and began looking around once more. She nodded with a slight smile, and breathed a shaky breath.
"Are you okay?" I asked in a calm voice.
She nodded once more, and whispered a single word. "Perfect."
I watched as she stared at the beautiful, lit up city just below us. The lights illuminated the night sky, also drawing attention to the thousands of stars scattered all above us.
"I've never seen something so gorgeous," she whispered.
I thought the same thing as I looked at her- out of everything that was currently surrounding us, she is the one thing that caught my eye.
