Millie's POV

I slowly walked down the hallway, holding my book tightly against my chest. I took deep breaths, trying not to let my anxiety get the best of me. It was the first day of junior year, and my heart raced as I walked down the familiar, crowded hallways. I know I should be excited, but junior year is much different from the others. The football players and cheerleaders begin to take over the school, even more so than before. By now, it is much clearer who the popular kids are, and who the non-popular kids are. There are many more parties, which means that there are more that I have to avoid. Although there was a very defined line between the popular kids and the non-popular kids, I didn't fall in either category- I was just me. There were the jocks, the cheerleaders, the nerds, and many more, but I was on my own. I didn't believe in categorizing myself because at the end of the day, they were just dumb labels, right?

Holding my schedule in my shaky hands, I walked to my first class- geometry. Kids were gathered in their own little groups, talking about what they did over the summer.

"Dude I got so fucking wasted at that party," declared one boy.

"Did you see Hannah? Dude, she was so fucked up," said another.

I rolled my eyes and walked to the back of the classroom, noticing that there was someone sitting in the seat that I was headed to. His dark curly hair and the freckles across the bridge of his nose immediately caught my attention. He wore a dark gray sweatshirt, along with black jeans and red converse. He sat there with his head down, scrolling through his phone with earbuds in. I didn't want to sit with the loud, annoying kids up front, so I decided to take a seat in the desk to the left of him. I opened my book and began reading where I left off, when out of the corner of my eye, I noticed him glance up at me for a couple of seconds, quickly looking back down.

"Alright, class, quiet down please," announced the teacher, "I hope you enjoyed your summer, but now it's time to get back to work. I see here that we have some new faces joining us, so we're going to do a little activity. Please turn to the person on your right and tell them your name, and one thing about yourself."

I hesitantly turned to my right, where the boy I hadn't met before was sitting.

"Well, um, I'm Millie," I said quietly, "and, um, I like to read."

The boy stared at me with a look of curiosity in his eyes. "Uh, I'm Finn... and I, um, just moved here from Vancouver."

I nodded my head awkwardly, not knowing what to say next. "Well it's nice to meet you, Finn."

Later that day at lunch, I searched helplessly for a table to sit at. Many more tables were taken up than usual, leaving me standing at the front of the cafeteria, not knowing what to do next. My eyes scanned over every table, until I noticed Finn sitting alone at a table in the back. Although it wasn't my first choice, it was the best one. I walked towards the back, holding my lunch tray with a tight grip. I slowly approached the table where Finn was sitting, who once again had his earbuds in and was scrolling through his phone.

"Hey, um, is it okay if I sit here?" I asked hesitantly.

"Yeah, go ahead," he faintly smiled. I took a seat, pulling my book out of my backpack. I ignored my lunch, immediately becoming absorbed in my book.

"You weren't kidding when you said you liked to read."

I looked up, noticing Finn had been watching me. "Oh yeah, I, um, I love to read," I laughed nervously.

"What else do you like to do?"

"Well, um, I like studying and writing."

"Oh, come on," he let out a small laugh, "no one actually likes school."

"Well then I guess I'm included in the small group of people that do," I smiled.

He silently stared at me for a few moments, the right side of his mouth curled upwards.

"I guess you are."

Finn's POV

This girl wasn't your average 16-year old girl. I had just met her a couple of hours ago, and I had already figured that out. She wasn't like the long-haired, bubblegum smacking, self-absorbed girls I had known in Vancouver- she was different. I paid close attention to the way her short brown hair fell gently on her face, how her gorgeous brown eyes immediately caught my attention. Something about her smile lit up the room, and the way she carried herself off was much different from what I've seen in other girls. Just from the small amount of time I've spent with her, I already knew that this girl was the first step to helping me forget my past.

Author's Note- hey guys! I know this sort of sounds like a basic fanfic so far but I promise, it's not. If it works out the way I want it to, this story will be really interesting!

Although I didn't really mention it, Millie is 16 and Finn is 17.

I hope you guys like this story!(:
