Chapter 21- Change of Plan

Akatsuki Base

It was a quiet day in the Akatsuki base.

After the fight with Itachi, we had come back to the hideout, but I hadn’t seen Rain for some time now.

And to be honest I didn’t want to see him. The last thing he told me before he left was that I was to stay put.

So I couldn’t go out to look for Itachi.

I still didn’t know what happened to him.

I sat on the rug in front of the fireplace, in a stone-cut room that was used as a library. There were no windows; only a bunch of bookshelves, tables and chairs.

I stared at the crackling fire, watching it engulf the coal as it slowly burned away.

The hideout seemed empty. I figured Rain gave all the other members something to do. They had a tendency to hang around, and showed a reluctance to do any form of work.

Lazy bunch.

But once Rain gave them a task to do, they fulfilled it to the letter. They knew the consequences if they didn’t.

I wasn’t sure how I long I stayed there, lost in my own thoughts, but I heard shuffling outside the room and I got up to investigate.

Looking out into the hallway I didn’t see any obvious signs of movement. Following the stone-walled corridor around, I came to the lodging rooms and saw that Itachi’s door was open.

My heart hammered in my chest. Did this mean he was alive?

I pushed the door open slowly, and my heart sank to see it was Rain. I noticed his pale hair first, but looking around I saw the room was absolutely trashed. There wasn’t much in the room in the first place, but what was there had been strewn about and even the bed was laying around in pieces. The curtains were ripped to shreds and there was broken glass and wood lying in small piles. I was surprised the room hadn’t been torched yet, there was so much destruction.

What on earth had happened? Rain was standing amidst the chaos with a piece of paper in his hand. He had just been staring at it, a blank expression on his face.

“What happened? Is Itachi back?” I asked tentatively.

Rain shook his head, “No.”

“Is he dead?”

He shook his head again. “No he is very much alive,” Rain answered, and looked rather regretful.

At least he was still alive. And for that I felt a certain degree of relief.

“So, when is he coming back?” I pressed.

Rain glanced at me then, a flash of annoyance on his features for a nano-second, only to disappear again, “He won’t be coming back I’m afraid.”

I opened my mouth to speak but he held his hand up, “No more questions. You need rest Yuri.”

“I can’t sleep,” I answered, but then he rested his attention on me and smiled, and my blood ran cold. I felt myself pale and quickly backed out of the room.

“I’ll go and rest,” I said hurriedly and walked away, only barely stopping myself from sprinting away from him.

I stopped when I rounded a few corners. This was ridiculous. I needed answers.

But being trapped in the Akatsuki base with only Rain as company, I wasn’t going to be finding out anything anytime soon.

I found myself yawning, coming up the stairs to where my room was. Maybe Rain was right. I needed rest.

Maybe I would feel better after a good sleep.

“So we’re here as you requested,” Kakashi said. His wide brimmed hat wavered in the sandy breeze.

Gai stood by him, his eyes fixed firmly on the two cloaked figures that stood before them.

“Thank you for coming,” one of the figures said. He looked up, his eyes dark and determined.

“We’re on a mission at the moment,” Gai said, “Funnily enough it’s to search for your wayward brother. We don’t have much time.”

“I understand,” Itachi nodded, “Although it would be a waste of time to search for him. He will most certainly come to you. And this is a rather more pressing issue.”

“So what do you have to say?” Kakashi pressed.

“By now, Rain will realise that I’ve left, and has figured out what I plan to do. He will likely prepare Yuri as soon as possible, and will no doubt head for Konoha as planned.”

“How do we know we can trust you?” Gai asked, doubt clearly written on his face.

“I will allow you to bind me with whatever jutsu you want, then take me to Tsunade. She will know that I’m telling the truth.”

Gai snorted, “I don’t know about that.”

Kakashi turned to him, “If he’s telling the truth, then we must do what we can to protect the village.”

“Hn.”

“So, ANY jutsu you say?” Kakashi asked Itachi.

Itachi nodded, “Any jutsu.”

“OK.”

Kakashi stretched his fingers in readiness and did a hand seal for the most complex binding jutsu he could think of; one that would inflict enormous pain, and even death, for any attempt to escape it. It took quite a while to do, so it would be very difficult to accomplish under battle situations. But Itachi stood quietly the whole time. His accomplice looked on without a word; he looked very much like Kisame although it was difficult to tell because of the wide hat, and he never raised his head.

Once the jutsu was in place, Gai nodded towards the figure next to Itachi, “What about your friend?”

“He is no threat,” Itachi answered, his voice coming out rather strained as he was bound by the jutsu, “He will wait outside the village, until Tsunade has confirmed that I’m telling the truth.”

Kakashi and Gai looked at each other.

“What are we going to do about Naruto and the others?” Gai asked.

Kakashi shrugged, “I guess it’s a change of plan.”
